2026 Fantasy Outlook
Written off by many after a disastrous 2023 rookie campaign, Johnston made major contributions to the Chargers in 2024 and 2025, putting up receiving lines of 55-711-8 and 51-735-8. Drops have been an issue, and his target volume hasn't been consistent, but Johnston has done well with his downfield opportunities overall, scoring eight TDs the past two years on targets traveling 20-plus yards downfield. Last year, Johnston seemed to be breaking out early in the season, with averages of 5.2 catches for 75.4 yards and 0.8 TDs over the first five weeks (8.0 targets per game). He then missed Week 6 with a hamstring injury, slumped during the middle of the season, and was inconsistent down the stretch while dealing with an injury-ravaged offensive line. Johnston's season-long average of 12.5 PPR points was a career-high, but he averaged just 9.0 PPR points and 37.8 yards over his final 10 games (including playoffs). He'll have a chance to get back on track under new Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, though 2025 second-round pick Tre' Harris could perhaps make a bid for Johnston's starting job if Johnston struggles in the new system. The Chargers exercised Johnston's fifth-year option for the 2027 season Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The No. 21 overall pick in the 2023 Draft, Johnston has gotten his career on track after what was a subpar rookie season. Across 29 regular-season games over the past two seasons, Johnston has secured 106 of 175 targets for 1,446 yards and 16 touchdowns as Justin Herbert's top downfield perimeter wideout. Johnston has improved his yards-per-catch average every season and finished 21st in the NFL at 14.4 yards per reception during the 2025 campaign. With Keenan Allen still unsigned, there's room for Johnston's role to grow this upcoming season.

2023
Johnston arrived in Los Angeles in 2023 as the 21st overall pick and spent most of his rookie season in the starting lineup, drawing targets on a meager 13.7 percent of routes and catching just 56.7 percent of those chances. His numbers improved last season under a new coaching staff, with the yards per route more than doubling from 0.88 to 1.85, but there were still some ugly weeks along the way, including an 0-for-5 showing in the playoff loss to Houston. Johnston scored eight TDs and averaged 5.4 yards after the catch, but he pulled in just 60.4 percent of his targets while struggling to track balls downfield. The Chargers responded by drafting Tre Harris in the second round and later signing Keenan Allen, giving Johnston tough competition for perimeter snaps in a balanced offense where Ladd McConkey is the clear No. 1 receiver. While there isn't much chance of major volume growth relative to last year, Johnston does have some shot to maintain his role and improve the per-target numbers.
After being drafted by the Chargers in the first round last year, Johnston had a terrible rookie season. Once Mike Williams went down with an ACL tear Week 3, Johnston typically played a lot of snaps but caught just 38 of 67 targets (56.7 percent) and surpassed 30 yards in four games. In the last five weeks of the season, Johnston averaged 58 snaps but failed to reach 30 yards even once. Despite the Year 1 struggles, Johnston should get another chance to prove himself in 2024 under a new coaching staff. Fellow WRs Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are no longer with the Chargers, replaced by second-round pick Ladd McConkey and 27-year-old DJ Chark (now on his fourth team in four years). Johnston and Joshua Palmer are the returning wideouts with experience as NFL starters, so it'll likely come down to those two, McConkey and Chark taking most of the WR snaps under running-game-focused offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
Johnston is the No. 1 WR prototype in this year's rookie class, while fellow first-rounders Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison and Zay Flowers lack ideal measurables. At 6-3, 208, Johnston put up a 40.5-inch vertical and 134-inch broad jump at the 2023 combine, later running a reported 4.50 40 at his pro day. That after totaling 634 yards in eight games as a sophomore and 1,069 yards in 14 games as a junior, albeit with a limited route tree and dependence on the deep ball. Fortunately for him, he landed with one of the better deep throwers in the league, though Justin Herbert's volume skewed toward the short passing game under former OC Joe Lombardi. New OC Kellen Moore typically had his offenses in Dallas move at a fast pace while taking plenty of shots downfield, and he may favor three-wide sets more than ever after the Chargers used the 21st overall pick on a talented receiver to join Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. It's a situation where Johnston merely profiles as the No. 3, which makes him unlikely to see more than 5-6 targets per game if Allen and Williams both stay healthy (which they didn't last season).

Fifth-year option exercised
WRLos Angeles Chargers
April 29, 2026
The Chargers exercised Johnston's fifth-year option Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The exercising of the speedy fourth-year wideout's option was a mere formality, and the Chargers will now have plenty of time to contemplate a long-term extension for their 2023 first-round pick. Johnston has had trouble with drops over his first three seasons, but he's accumulated 144 receptions for 1,877 yards and 18 touchdowns across 46 regular-season games while adding three catches for 20 yards across two career postseason contests.
