Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mariota signed a one-year contract with Washington for a second straight offseason, electing to stick around as Jayden Daniels' backup after thriving in the two games Daniels left early last season. Mariota threw two touchdown passes in both of those games, leading the Commanders to victory and cementing himself as one of the league's better backup QBs. He might even have fantasy value in single-QB fantasy leagues if Daniels were to miss time, as Mariota still offers some running ability at age 31. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Ruled out
Mariota (hand/quad) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Philadelphia, Tashan Reed of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Josh Johnson will start for a second straight week. There's been no indication that Mariota's injury will be a problem this offseason, and he's been a good fit in Kliff Kingsbury's offense as the backup to Jayden Daniels (elbow). Still, there's some chance Mariota doesn't return to Washington, as he's currently on a one-year contract and thus can become an unrestricted free agent in March.

After signing a one-year deal with Washington in March, Mariota will back up No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels. In Mariota's last two years as a Week 1 starter -- 2019 in Tennessee and 2022 in Atlanta -- he lost the job before the season was out. Last season was spent backing up Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. Mariota is a capable game manager, but he takes a lot of sacks and struggles with downfield accuracy, and he's often been plagued by injuries during his 10-year career. He's still mobile, though, so perhaps his rushing ability will lead to fantasy value if he ends up filling in for Daniels at some point.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set to start for rest of year
Mariota should remain the starting quarterback for the Commanders for the rest of the 2025 season after Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the team has elected to shut down Jayden Daniels.
ANALYSIS
Daniels returned from a dislocated non-throwing elbow in Week 14 against the Vikings but lasted only 39 snaps before being removed following a hit that had him showing visible pain. As it turns out, that will be his last appearance of the year, as Washington is already eliminated from playoff contention and has no reason to risk further injury to its young franchise QB. Mariota has been a solid replacement, completing 62.0 percent of his passes with a 10:7 TD:INT and 7.5 YPA in 10 games while adding 298 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Mariota will be backed up by 39-year-old Josh Johnson over the final three weeks.
