2026 Fantasy Outlook
It was heartening to see Mitchell get a two-year, $9.25 million deal from the Chargers in free agency this offseason, because it was a serious worry that he would never play again when he suffered that season-ending knee injury at the end of his 2023 rookie season. It was particularly cruel for such a thing to happen to an undrafted rookie who had quickly made the league look foolish for passing on him out of East Carolina. At his best, Mitchell is something like a slightly slower De'Von Achane with lesser pass-catching skills -- Mitchell isn't bad as a receiver, he just isn't a standout. But it was still a very Achane-like thing to do when Mitchell ran for 396 yards and two touchdowns on the first 47 carries of his NFL career (8.4 YPC). Although it took almost two years to fully recover from that 2023 injury -- his 2024 season was all but lost to it -- Mitchell mostly looked like himself again in 2025, running for 341 yards on 59 carries (5.8 YPC). The concern is that then-offensive coordinator Todd Monken seemed resistant to giving Mitchell playing time over Justice Hill, presumably out of discontent over Mitchell's pass blocking. It's possible that Mitchell will never become a trusted passing-down back, instead remaining an off-the-bench rushing specialist, albeit a highly explosive one. With the Chargers, we can expect Mitchell to return kicks and play some kind of role off the bench. If starter Omarion Hampton were to miss time, Mitchell and Kimani Vidal likely would form a timeshare. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Mitchell brings his talents to a backfield already led by Omarion Hamption and No. 2 back Kimani Vidal. Across three seasons with Baltimore, the 24-year-old logged a total of 112 carries for 767 yards and three touchdowns, averaging an impressive 6.34 YPC. While the Hampton and Vidal represent difficult competition for Mitchell to earn depth opportunities, he seems a strong fit for new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's scheme and will be a sleeper candidate to impress with the Chargers.

2023
Mitchell missed the first half of the 2024 season while completing his recovery from a knee injury, and once he did join the Ravens' backfield, there was little work for him behind workhorse Derrick Henry. Mitchell didn't get a carry until Week 17, and he wasn't used on offense at all during Baltimore's playoff run. He did show flashes of his big-play potential as a kick returner and receiver however, and should the 31-year-old Henry begin to break down in 2025, Mitchell might be better positioned than Justice Hill or Rasheen Ali to step into the lead role.
Few players' 2023 seasons were as anguishing to witness as Mitchell's, because the feel-good story of the undersized, undrafted speed demon who rose to improbable stardom gave way to the story of Mitchell's gruesome, season-ending knee injury. Although reported as a mere ACL tear, Mitchell's injury looked much worse than that and may ultimately be revealed to have entailed additional damage. The timing of the injury (Dec. 17) presents him with a challenge to be ready for Week 1, and even if that happens he'll just be a change-of-pace runner behind offseason addition Derrick Henry.
An undrafted free agent out of East Carolina, Mitchell signed on with the Ravens this spring and it was an interesting fit that seemed to put him in position to crack the roster with a good camp. Mitchell has some legitimate talent; he averaged 6.9 yards per carry over his final two seasons at East Carolina (375 attempts) and was a threat in the passing game as well with 49 catches on 68 targets for 505 yards. Shortly before training camp, though, Baltimore added veteran Melvin Gordon to the backfield. Whereas Mitchell once looked like he only had to beat out Justice Hill for the final running back spot on the roster, now it would likely take some tough injury luck elsewhere in the backfield for Mitchell to open the year anywhere but the practice squad. He has the type of speed (4.37) and pass-catching ability to bolster some deep dynasty value, but his chances of making an impact in 2023 are minimal.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Coveted by McDaniel
RBLos Angeles Chargers
May 12, 2026
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel made Mitchell a priority signing this offseason, Omar Navarro of the Chargers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
General manager Joe Horitz noted McDaniel's excitement about adding the running back this offseason, with the offensive coordinator going so far as to put Mitchell on a "Wanted" poster at the team's facilities. Mitchell said that the Chargers' enthusiasm played a significant role in his decision to sign with the team, and that he believes he has the chance to meaningfully contribute to the offense. He'll work behind Omarion Hampton, but he could still surpass his current high of 59 carries in a season.
