2026 Fantasy Outlook
Last season was challenging for the Chargers offense, which eventually imploded under the weight of offensive line injuries. That weight fell hard on the backfield, yet Hampton still demonstrated clear promise and major fantasy upside as a rookie, averaging 4.4 YPC and scoring five TDs in nine games. At 6-feet, 221, Hampton has all the tools to project as a high-volume workhorse, including as a pass catcher. He dominated at North Carolina (back-to-back 1,500-yard rushing seasons) and then posted strong numbers at the 2025 Combine (4.46-second 40, 130-inch broad jump). Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh spoke glowingly of Hampton after the 2025 NFL Draft, declaring that the team had refused a major trade offer for the 22nd overall pick, unwilling to pass on Hampton. An abbreviated rookie season mostly validated Harbaugh's zeal, with only injuries stopping Hampton from making a real charge at Rookie of the Year honors. A fracture in his left ankle cost Hampton eight games, and then later a right ankle sprain cost him one full game and nearly all of another. With Hampton and his offensive line expected back healthy this season, new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has a full toolkit to improve on Greg Roman's lackluster rushing attack. The Chargers did sign Keaton Mitchell, showing some intention to use a backup RB, but the 191-pound former Raven has never taken even 70 touches in an NFL season. Hampton should be busy, and the Chargers offense may be getting a facelift. Read Past Outlooks

Excited for McDaniel's system
RBLos Angeles Chargers
June 18, 2026
Hampton said Wednesday that he and the other Chargers running backs are excited to play for offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, NFL.com's Bobby Kownack reports.
ANALYSIS
Hampton also mentioned earning a Terrell Davis comp from McDaniel this offseason. There's understandably a lot of hype around the Chargers offense with McDaniel taking over and OTs Joe Alt (foot) and Rashawn Slater (knee) expected to return from last year's season-ending injuries. The situation is indeed promising for Hampton in terms of per-carry efficiency and TD upside, but there's been some doubt about his workload projection after the Chargers gave Keaton Mitchell a two-year, $9.3 million contract this offseason. They also still have Kimani Vidal, but Hampton is the largest of the bunch (6-foot, 220 pounds) and probably also the best pass catcher -- without sacrificing much in terms of speed (4.46 40) or agility. If McDaniel's offense lives up to the hype, Hampton won't need 300 carries to make his fantasy managers happy.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Ashton Jeanty tends to hog the headlines, but if Hampton were in any other draft there might have been more spotlight to properly appreciate him. Hampton is either blue-chip or close to it in his own right, heading to Los Angeles as the 22nd overall pick after topping 1,500 rushing yards in back-to-back seasons for UNC. At 6-feet, 221 pounds, Hampton logged excellent athletic testing at the combine, running a 4.46-second 40-yard dash with strong jumps (38-inch vertical, 130-inch broad jump) to finalize a standout prospect profile. He averaged 23.4 carries and 3.2 catches per game in 2024, and more than 20 touches per game in 2023, boasting elite efficiency in both samples without missing any games. Hampton may eventually rank among the league leaders in touches, but he'll first need to compete with Najee Harris, who signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Chargers this offseason. While not on Hampton's level as a pure runner, Harris offers an unusual combination of size, durability and passing-down competence, making him a threat to handle high-value touches even if/when the rookie takes over as the Chargers' lead back.

Paid big compliment by new OC
RBLos Angeles Chargers
June 17, 2026
Hampton said Wednesday that new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel recently remarked the second-year running back reminds him of Hall of Famer Terrell Davis, Alex Insdorf of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hampton wasn't yet born during Davis' NFL tenure, which lasted from 1995 through 2001. However, the star second-year back said he's seen some highlights of the Broncos great, who rushed for over 1,500 yards in three separate seasons, including a 2,008-yard, 21-touchdown campaign in 1998. In addition to being appreciative of the confidence conveyed in McDaniels' comparison, Hampton also said Wednesday he and the rest of the running backs are very excited about the coordinator's creative offense.
