2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
McCaffrey began the 2025 season with an unspecified Achilles' tendon issue casting ominous clouds overhead, but somehow he shook it off and evaded the worst fears of his fantasy investors. McCaffrey not only started all year for San Francisco; he was almost certainly overworked as the 49ers scrambled to fix production shortages caused by injuries to other skill-position players. McCaffrey played in every game and logged 927 snaps, his most since 2019 and the third-most of his career. With McCaffrey turning 30 in June and having plenty of injuries in his past, the 49ers might want to lessen his workload relative to last year's career-high 311 carries and 102 receptions. The question is whether the 49ers will actually have that luxury. Second-year fifth-round prospect Jordan James offers some promise, and third-round rookie pick Kaelon Black brings a little more firepower between the tackles, but it's not clear either will become a viable starter, nor is it clear fourth-year pro Isaac Guerendo will have a roster spot. It wouldn't be shocking if the 49ers overworked McCaffrey again, which would again be to the delight of his fantasy investors. Read Past Outlooks

Downplays workload concerns
McCaffrey said after Thursday's OTAs that he's looking forward to sustaining another heavy workload in 2026, and that any reductions in touches should come in practice rather than games, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
"I think everything else can be monitored during the week or with a practice schedule or certain ways you train, whatever it may be," McCaffrey said. "But when it comes to game days, I like to think you prepare yourself for playing every snap." McCaffrey handled a career-high 413 touches during the 2025 regular season, leading the NFL in that category for the third time in his nine-year career. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier in the offseason that the team would like to provide McCaffrey more help in the backfield to ensure the star running back stays fresh and effective down the stretch, but McCaffrey has no plans to cede a significant share of regular-season snaps to any of Jordan James, Kaelon Black, Isaac Guerendo (pectoral), Patrick Taylor, Jordan Mims or Jermar Jefferson, all of whom are competing for slotting behind McCaffrey on San Francisco's running back depth chart.

Everything went wrong for McCaffrey in 2024, as what was called a calf strain in early August ended up being Achilles tendinitis in both legs and delayed his season debut until Week 10. The 49ers had suggested he was on track to play Week 1, right up until gameday, yet they denied any setbacks had occurred even after he went on injured reserve. Whatever the case, McCaffrey was not quite himself upon his Week 10 return, immediately handling snap shares above 80 percent but averaging just 3.5 YPC over his first three games. He got off to a hot start in his fourth game, Week 14 at Buffalo, only to suffer a season-ending PCL sprain in the second quarter. He once again was all-or-nothing in terms of durability/injury luck, playing fewer than eight games for a third time in the past five years (whereas his other five NFL seasons all featured 16 or 17 regular-season appearances). He said in early January that he was almost back to full strength, having avoided surgery in the offseason. San Francisco's offensive line is a slight concern with guard Aaron Banks off to Green Bay and left tackle Trent Williams turning 37 in July, but it's generally a poor bet to fade a Kyle Shanahan offense, and McCaffrey is still (barely) on the right side of 30 and just two years removed from his 2023 career highs for rushing yards (1,459) and YPC (5.4).

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Still prepping for heavy workload
McCaffrey, who logged a league- and career-high 413 touches during the 2025 regular season, isn't planning on having his workload reduced during games this coming season, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Due to the combination of a complicated injury history and his immense value, McCaffrey's workloads have been a consistent topic of conversation throughout his career. However, despite rumblings this offseason the team would find a way to ease his volume some in 2026, McCaffrey said Thursday he primarily expected his workload to be managed "in practice, not in games." McCaffrey will be attempting to build on a 2,000-plus-scrimmage-yard tally for the third time in his career in 2026, but Wagoner points out he's played only a combined seven games the following regular seasons in the two other instances.
