2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Aiyuk technically remains on the 49ers roster, with the team perhaps hoping to receive modest trade compensation even though the wideout's contract would presumably be considered untenable by any acquiring team. The Niners already voided his guarantees for 2026, after Aiyuk failed to show up for team activities last spring/fall while finishing up his rehab from an ACL tear the year before. He probably wouldn't have done much in 2026 anyway, but he seemed oddly fine with not playing and losing his guarantees, choosing not to push for NFLPA involvement or an appeal. He turned 28 in March, so there's still plenty of time, theoretically, to rebound from the severe knee injury (one that he suffered two months after signing a contract extension). Prior to the extension, Aiyuk put up 78-1,018-8 in 2022 and 75-1,342-7 in 2023, giving the Niners a reliable deep threat and fantasy managers a reliable starter. Those days may be gone, even if Aiyuk eventually gets back into football shape and resumes his career with some team or another. Read Past Outlooks
RANKS
Interested in joining Commanders
In a video posted to Instagram Wednesday, Aiyuk (knee) said that if the 49ers released him, he'd sign with the Commanders "tomorrow," ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
That said, it's unclear whether the Commanders would have interest in signing Aiyuk in such a scenario. Moreover, it's not a situation they can publicly comment on, given that the wideout is still under contract with the 49ers. Back in January, 49ers GM John Lynch said that it was "safe to say that (Aiyuk) has played his last snap with the Niners." However, since then the team has held on to the 2020 first-rounder in the hopes of finding a trade partner. San Francisco's veteran players are set to arrive at training camp July 25, with the report suggesting that it's possible the team is waiting until then to make a call on Aiyuk's status with the franchise.

Aiyuk finally got the big extension he wanted at the end of a contentious 2024 summer, but it wasn't long before the 49ers regretted it. After turning 105 targets into 1,342 yards and seven TDs the year before, Aiyuk had just one game in 2024 with 50-plus yards or double-digit PPR points before suffering ACL and MCL tears Week 7. He had surgery in mid-November, leaving him uncertain for Week 1 of 2025 and unlikely to regain his top form early in the year. Aiyuk will again face tough competition for targets, with Deebo Samuel's offseason departure negated by a breakout 2024 from Jauan Jennings and a strong finish to the year from rookie first-round pick Ricky Pearsall. With TE George Kittle and RB Christian McCaffrey also still kicking, we can probably abandon any prior hopes of Aiyuk seeing a volume spike once Samuel left the 49ers. The good news is that Aiyuk has shown he can put up WR2 fantasy numbers on WR3 volume while serving as the vertical threat in a top offense. However, it's not entirely clear the 49ers still have an elite offense, nor is it certain that Aiyuk will pose the same field-stretching threat a year after major knee surgery.

Reaffirms commitment to Commanders
Aiyuk posted a video to Instagram on Wednesday saying if the 49ers release him, he'd sign with Washington "tomorrow," ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Aiyuk, who last played in Week 7 of the 2024 season due to a serious knee injury and a subsequent falling out between him and the 49ers, has had a busy week invoking the Commanders publicly. On Monday he posted an Instagram video in which he shouted "Go Commanders," and Wednesday brought two more videos in which he held a football with a Commanders logo and then pledged to immediately sign with Washington if he becomes a free agent. Due to league tampering rules, the Commanders are unable to confirm or deny any interest in the veteran wideout since he remains under contract with San Francisco.
