2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Howard, a 2025 sixth-round pick, is still looking for a chance to make his NFL debut after spending his rookie year largely in an emergency No. 3 QB role behind Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph. The Steelers, and new head coach Mike McCarthy, have spoken highly of Howard’s development entering Year 2, and with Rodgers back in the fold, he’s in line to compete with Rudolph and rookie third-round pick Drew Allar for backup slotting. It begins as a crowded situation, but Howard brings some upside to the table. He flashed in his only year as Ohio State’s starting quarterback in 2024, leading the Buckeyes to a national championship while surpassing 4,000 passing yards and totaling a 35:10 TD:INT. Slides down spot with Rodgers back
Howard's chances of starting in 2026 have diminished, as Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year contract with the Steelers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Rodgers re-signing, Howard was in position to compete for a starting role against veteran Mason Rudolph and rookie third-round pick Drew Allar (ankle). Rodgers is comfortably situated atop the quarterback depth chart now that the 42-year-old starter has returned to Pittsburgh for the start of OTAs, while Howard will have to jostle for positioning on the depth chart and could realistically miss out on making the team at all.

Howard spent the first four years of his collegiate career at Kansas State before taking over as Ohio State's starting quarterback in 2024, surpassing 4,000 passing yards in a season that culminated in a national championship. Across his 16 appearances as a Buckeye, he totaled 4,010 passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions along with 105 rushing attempts for 226 yards and seven scores. Howard fell to the sixth round in the 2025 NFL Draft and will have some time to develop behind a veteran in 2025 after the Steelers signed Aaron Rodgers to serve as their starter.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Strackbein's favorite for QB2
In his list of biggest winners and losers of OTAs and minicamp, Noah Strackbein of SI.com believes that Howard enters training camp as the favorite to win the backup quarterback job over Mason Rudolph and rookie Drew Allar.
ANALYSIS
Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year contract to rejoin the Steelers for the 2026 season, leaving Howard, Rudolph and Allar to battle for the backup job. Rudolph is the veteran out of that three-man group, but Strackbein believes that Howard has shown enough in the Steelers' offseason program to have a leg up on the competition heading into training camp, with Allar projected as the practice squad's QB. Howard was the Steelers' sixth-round pick of the 2025 NFL Draft and was the team's emergency quarterback for the second half of last season after coming off injured reserve in mid-November.
