Out of 2026 starting mix
Rudolph will be relegated to a backup role again in 2026, as Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year contract with the Steelers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Rodgers will reclaim the starting role he possessed in 2025, leaving Rudolph to battle for the second spot on the depth chart with 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard and 2026 third-round pick Drew Allar (ankle). If one of the younger quarterbacks shows promise in training camp, the Steelers could also opt to trade Rudolph to a team seeking an experienced backup. Rudolph has posted a 9-9-1 record in 19 regular-season starts split between the Steelers and Titans, including a loss in his lone start of 2025 with Pittsburgh while Rodgers was sidelined by a wrist injury.

Rudolph signed a one-year contract this offseason to return to Pittsburgh, where he spent the first five years of his NFL career. He went 1-4 as a starter for the Titans last year, throwing nine touchdowns and nine interceptions on 228 pass attempts for one of the worst teams in the league. Aaron Rodgers signed with the Steelers in June, making an injury the only path to snaps for Rudolph. If he ends up playing this season, he will have more help around him, as the Steelers have a solid defense and offensive line. The pass-catching group, however, likely will be no better than average even if WR DK Metcalf proves to be an upgrade on George Pickens (traded to the Cowboys). The team also traded for Jonnu Smith, giving it another receiving tight end in addition to Pat Freiermuth.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Expendable after Rodgers return?
With the Steelers expected to sign Aaron Rodgers to a one-year contract worth up to $25 million, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com believes that Rudolph could be traded or cut by Pittsburgh this offseason.
ANALYSIS
Assuming the deal is signed, the Steelers will have four quarterbacks on the roster in Rodgers, Rudolph, 2025 sixth-rounder Will Howard and Penn State's Drew Allar, who was selected in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Rudolph is the most experienced backup option behind Rodgers, but Pryor notes that moving on from Rudolph would save the Steelers $3 million in cap space and that a trade could net the team a late-round draft pick. Whatever decision the Steelers make will likely come once coach Mike McCarthy properly evaluates Rudolph, Howard and Allar during OTAs, minicamp and training camp.
