Likely stuck backing up Love
Allgeier will likely have to settle for a backup role in 2026, as Arizona drafted running back Jeremiyah Love third overall Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Love is expected to immediately ascend to the top of the depth chart for the Cardinals after racking up 2,497 rushing yards and 35 rushing touchdowns over the past two years at Notre Dame. Allgeier spent the past three years backing up Bijan Robinson in Atlanta, and Arizona's free-agent addition now will have to compete for carries with another top-10 draft pick. The Cardinals also have James Conner and Trey Benson (knee) on the roster, so even reaching last year's total of 157 touches could be tough for Allgeier if Arizona's backfield stays healthy.

Allgeier is a capable starter and might one day have the chance to prove it, but in the meantime he's simply an overqualified backup to a top-five running back. The Falcons would love to nurse leads often enough to give both Allgeier and Bijan Robinson double-digit carries on a regular basis, but it hasn't typically played out that way, and Atlanta doesn't project as a top team this year. If Robinson were to miss any time, though, Allgeier can plug in and thrive as a starter. In fact, Allgeier was a starter for most of his 2022 rookie season, when he ran for 1,035 yards and three touchdowns on 210 carries (4.9 YPC). He'll never be the dangerous receiving threat Robinson is, but Allgeier is a competent blocker with good hands (88.7 percent career catch rate). What's more, Allgeier has yet to fumble in the NFL, making him quietly one of the league's most well-rounded running backs.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set to back up another top-10 pick
Allgeier will likely have to compete for a backup role in 2026, as Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports that the Cardinals drafted running back Jeremiyah Love third overall Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After spending the past three seasons in Bijan Robinson's shadow with the Falcons, Allgeier seemed primed to take on a larger role after signing with the Cardinals to join a backfield headlined by James Conner and Trey Benson, who were limited to seven combined appearances in the 2025 regular season due to their respective foot and knee injuries. Instead of competing for a starting role, Allgeier will likely be relegated to change-of-pace duties behind a top-10 pick once again after the Cardinals drafted Love out of Notre Dame.
