More competition in backfield
Benson (knee) faces even more competition in the Arizona backfield after the Cardinals used the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 Draft on Jeremiyah Love on Thursday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Along with Love, who projects to vault right to the top of the depth chart at running back, the Cardinals also signed Tyler Allgeier and restructured James Conner's contract over the offseason. Benson has never played a single regular-season snap on special teams in his career but may have to learn if he's going to stick in Arizona. The more likely outcome may be that Benson is traded to a team in need of backfield depth before Week 1. The 2024 third-round pick has a career 92-451-1 rushing line, good for a strong 4.9 yards per carry.

Benson was viewed as a raw prospect out of Florida State, so the fact that he played only 131 snaps as a rookie doesn't prove anything conclusively. He overcame a brutal knee injury at Oregon before transferring to Florida State, which explains why the 2024 third-round pick finished his collegiate career with so little usage (316 career carries). What made Benson interesting as a prospect was his unusual combination of speed (4.39 40) and size (6-feet, 216 pounds). Few prospects can boast the sum of physical force and breakaway speed that Benson does on a given play, and that's what allowed him to be so productive with his limited touches at FSU (6.1 yards per carry, 24 rushing touchdowns). If Benson can iron out the rougher parts of his game, the results could be impressive. In the meantime, though, he remains a developmental guy behind a proven workhorse in James Conner.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could play with new team in 2026
Mike Clay of ESPN believes Benson won't play with the Cardinals in 2026, and the running back could instead wind up with one of the Commanders, Colts, Cowboys, Bengals, Packers, Chiefs or Browns.
ANALYSIS
Benson has struggled to stay healthy since being drafted in the third round in 2024, appearing in only 17 games through two NFL seasons. The Cardinals remade their backfield by drafting Jeremiyah Love third overall and signing Tyler Allgeier in free agency, so the team may opt to release Benson, in which case the third-year pro could seek a larger opportunity with one of the teams Clay mentions. Benson was sidelined by a knee injury to finish the 2025 season.
