2026 Fantasy Outlook
Penix tore his ACL in November last year -- his third career ACL injury -- to end what was a mediocre season anyway. He threw only nine TD passes in nine games, his completion percentage (60.1) ranked 30th and his on-target percentage (69.2) ranked 28th. Like his rookie year, Penix used his big arm to go deep plenty. His 8.8-yard average target depth ranked seventh as he threw 10-plus yards downfield at the second-highest rate in the league (39.9%). He just didn’t complete many of those passes, with 43.6 percent ranking 29th. The Falcons signed Tua Tagovailoa this offseason and said he'd compete with Penix for the starting job, though it isn't clear Penix will even participate in training camp or be ready for Week 1. Either way, the offense may be improved under new coach Kevin Stefanski, who inherits a strong offensive line and a trio of quality playmakers (Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts). The team's quarterbacks are far less interesting for fantasy, with Penix and Tagovailoa both offering the same discouraging combination of minimal running ability and a lengthy medical record. Taking part in throwing drills
The Falcons shared a video Tuesday showing Penix (knee - ACL) throwing to Drake London during spring offseason workouts, Marc Raimondi of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Penix is six months into his recovery from a partially torn left ACL suffered in mid-November of the 2025 season, his third such injury in the last eight years, so his participation in throwing drills is an encouraging sign. Atlanta has confirmed that the third-year QB is taking part in Phase 2 of the offseason program, which includes individual and group work but not yet 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 team drills. Beyond continuing his rehab and meeting the expected trajectory of Year 3 development, Penix also faces the challenge of learning new head coach Kevin Stefanski's offense while competing for the starting job with fellow southpaw Tua Tagovailoa, who signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with Atlanta this offseason. Penix has offered optimism that he will be ready for Week 1, though the Falcons haven't provided an official timetable for his recovery.

Drafted eighth overall last year, Penix replaced Kirk Cousins as Atlanta’s starter for the final three games and proved ready for the job. Cousins is still on the roster, but it’s Penix’s show this season. At first glance, Penix’s numbers don't impress. In fact, his on-target and completion percentages ranked 45th and 43rd, respectively, among 46 quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts. But it was only a 105-attempt sample, and one in which 5.7 percent of his throws were drops (fourth highest) and 14.3 percent of his attempts went 20-plus yards downfield (3rd) for an average target depth of 10.5 yards (2nd). Two of Penix's three interceptions hit a receiver in the hands before being bobbled away to a defender, and he averaged 7.4 YPA despite completing just 58.1 percent of his passes. His accuracy numbers likely will improve this year with the help of more short passes, and if his efficiency ticks up he’ll at least be a strong QB2 for superflex leagues. A lack of rushing, though, will cap his fantasy value unless he develops into one of the league's top passers. He has help to make that happen, starting with an excellent offensive line. RB Bijan Robinson is a capable pass catcher in addition to spearheading the rushing attack, giving Atlanta a well-rounded group of playmakers with WR Drake London, WR Darnell Mooney and TE Kyle Pitts. Familiarity with second-year offensive coordinator Zac Robinson could benefit everyone, putting Penix in position for a breakout year if he just holds up his end of the bargain.
