2026 Fantasy Outlook
Murray missed 12 games in 2025 with a foot injury, failing to play a full season for the fourth time in five years. His five games played looked a lot like the previous season when he relied almost entirely on short passes, threw too few TDs and was quick to run. Murray's 6.0-yard average target depth ranked 38th of 40 QBs with at least 160 attempts as just 28 percent of his passes went 10-plus yards downfield (34th). His career-low 5.9 YPA ranked 39th, and, like the year before, he was on pace for only about 20 TD passes over a full schedule. The lone bright spot was his rushing, where he averaged about 35 yards per game (a near 600-yard pace). The Cardinals released Murray in March, and he quickly landed in Minnesota to displace 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy as the starting quarterback. The Vikings’ offensive scheme and surrounding talent are major upgrades for Murray, who is now in the best set-up of his career with coach Kevin O’Connell calling plays. Justin Jefferson is one of the league’s best wide receivers, supported by quality complementary targets in Jordan Addison, newcomer Jauan Jennings, TE T.J. Hockenson and RB Aaron Jones. Murray's running could be scaled back some in Minnesota, but he’s still a strong bet to rank top five in rushing yards. The biggest doubts entail his ability to stay healthy and adapt to a more downfield-oriented passing game. Read Past Outlooks

Lands one-year deal from Minnesota
The Vikings signed Murray to a one-year contract Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
With Murray set to collect $36.8 million from the Cardinals in 2026 following his release from the team, Murray will earn the veteran league minimum from the Vikings, according to Schefter. The contract also contains a no-tag clause for next offseason, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Minnesota was always viewed as the likely landing spot for Murray, and he'll now be considered the slight favorite to win the QB1 job over J.J. McCarthy, though this will be one of the more fascinating position battles of the summer. After winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 followed by back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021, Murray's career was somewhat derailed by injuries and poor play. A fresh start appeared to be necessary, and he'll now have Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison at his disposal should he win the job over McCarthy.

Murray played a full schedule last season for the first time since 2020 and finished QB10 in fantasy. While that made him relevant in single-QB leagues, he didn’t necessarily hit his potential. Murray’s accuracy looks good on paper -- his on-target (76.2) and completion percentages (68.8) both ranked seventh in the league -- but considering his average target depth was only 7.1 yards (30th), he probably should have had higher rates. More touchdown passes would be nice too. Murray threw multiple TDs in a game just three times, and he needed four TDs in Week 18 just to surpass 20 for the season. Consequently, he scored 18-plus fantasy points just seven times. Murray at least boosted his scoring with 572 rushing yards, fourth among QBs, and added five scores. He said this offseason he intends to run more this year, which would be helpful for fantasy, but it would also bring added injury risk to a player who missed 18 games from 2021 to 2023. As for his passing, Murray needs more help from his receivers. Marvin Harrison disappointed in his rookie year as the fourth overall pick, and fellow wideout Michael Wilson is average at best. Tight end Trey McBride is Murray’s favorite target, but he had just two TD catches last year -- the fewest of any player with at least 110 targets. More running and a few more TD passes could shoot Murray up the QB rankings in fantasy, but he's unlikely to challenge the guys at the very top.

True QB competition in Minny
Murray and J.J. McCarthy are expected to be in a true competition for the Vikings' starting quarterback job this offseason, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
While Murray has far more experience and signed a one-year deal with Minnesota in March to try and revive his career after being cut loose by Arizona, the Vikings haven't given up on McCarthy emerging as their franchise signal-caller after making him the 10th overall pick in the 2024 Draft. Both QBs have dealt with injuries in recent years, however, with McCarthy missing the entire 2024 campaign and playing only 10 regular-season games in 2025, while Murray was limited to just five games last season. If one of them breaks down again this offseason, the job battle could resolve itself.
