2024 Fantasy Outlook
Wentz signed a one-year contract in April to back up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. Last season, he was sitting on his couch when he got the call in November to back up Matthew Stafford in L.A. Wentz started Week 18, throwing two TD passes and running for another score. Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Wentz might benefit from the short passing game Mahomes ran last season. Wentz’s YPA hasn’t topped 7.0 since 2018 and in his last full season as a starter, 2021 with the Colts, his average target depth was a middling 7.6. But he threw 27 TD passes that season, showing he’s not completely washed. His rushing ability adds fantasy upside, which should make him a decent option in two-QB leagues should disaster strike in Kansas City. Read Past Outlooks

Makes team debut
Wentz played one of the Chiefs' 70 snaps on offense in Sunday's 28-18 win over the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Signed to a one-year, $3.33 million contract in April, Wentz emerged from the preseason as the winner of the competition for the backup role behind starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Wentz got the chance to make his Chiefs debut in the second quarter, when head coach Andy Reid dialed up a unique two-quarterback formation near the goal line featuring both Mahomes and Wentz. Wentz took the snap and handed the ball off to Kareem Hunt, who was stopped at the one-yard line.

Wentz, the second overall pick in the 2016 Draft, started for three different teams over the last three seasons - Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Washington - but after being cut by the Commanders in February, the veteran signal-caller remains unsigned. At this stage, Wentz may have to settle for a backup role in his next locale unless injuries pave the way for the 30-year-old to compete for a No. 1 assignment with another franchise.

Foles endorsement has impact
Wentz, who signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs on Monday, noted Thursday that former Eagles teammate Nick Foles' past endorsement of Kansas City head coach Andy Reid impacted his decision to join the defending champions, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz and Foles were teammates in Philadelphia during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, and the latter had also started his career with the Eagles as a third-round pick in 2012. It was during that first tenure when Foles had a chance to initially work under Reid, then Philadelphia's head coach. Wentz noted Foles spoke glowingly of Reid and current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy when Wentz and Foles were teammates, noting "he loved working with those guys, and those things he said to me back then definitely still rang true in my head as I was making this decision."
