Tolbert is facing added competition for snaps, routes and targets after the Dolphins selected three rookie wide receivers in the 2026 NFL Draft, Matt Sullivan of The Sporting News reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami's main free-agent additions to the wide receiver corps after trading Jaylen Waddle to the Broncos and cutting Tyreek Hill (ACL) were Tolbert and Tutu Atwell, who joined incumbent 2024 sixth-round pick Malik Washington atop a wide open depth chart. Those veterans being joined by rookie third-round picks Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell (ACL), as well as fifth-rounder Kevin Coleman, now muddles the breakdown of available targets, especially in what seems like a run-first offense headlined by RB De'Von Achane and new dual-threat QB Malik Willis. Tolbert still figures to get every opportunity to compete for a starting role this offseason, but he and Atwell signed just one-year prove-it deals with Miami, so the team has greater incentive to develop Douglas, Bell and Coleman.

A 2022 third-round pick, Tolbert has seen his role grow with each passing season, taking 89 snaps in 2022, 477 snaps in 2023 and then 892 snaps last year. His per-route and per-target numbers were similar the past two seasons, but with twice as many routes in 2024 as in 2023, and scoring seven touchdowns instead of two. While CeeDee Lamb's injury absences were part of that equation, Tolbert at least proved himself capable as a No. 3/4 receiver, which figures to be his role again after the Cowboys acquired George Pickens in May. Tolbert is a clear favorite for the No. 3 WR job, with speedy return man KaVontae Turpin representing the most likely form of competition.
As a rookie in 2022, Tolbert was a hot name in the preseason. He followed that up by catching two passes for 12 yards all season. Last year, Tolbert saw his role increase. The receiver frequently played between 23 and 30 snaps. Tolbert was also targeted between three and five times in seven games. Despite seeing opportunity, he ended the season with 268 yards. With Michael Gallup no longer with the team, Tolbert could become an every-down player. It’s reasonable to predict a third-year breakout for the receiver.
A 2022 third-round pick out of South Alabama, Tolbert was viewed as a raw prospect whose skills needed to catch up to his athleticism. That didn't happen in his rookie season, as, despite the early season absence of Michael Gallup, Tolbert didn't play in the first two games and fell out of the wideout rotation for good after Week 12. Gallup will be further removed from his knee injury this year, and the Cowboys traded for Brandin Cooks in the offseason, so there's no clear path to a regular role for Tolbert in 2023 even if he does take a step forward in his development.
A 2022 third-round pick out of South Alabama, Tolbert's small-school background may have caused him to slip a bit in a WR-heavy draft class, but he offers the skills and athleticism to make an impact in the NFL. The 23-year-old has the route-running skills to play inside or outside, and while his polish and focus could stand to improve, his huge numbers as a senior in college highlight his potential. With Michael Gallup (ACL) and James Washington (foot) likely to miss the beginning of the season, Tolbert could see significant snaps right out of the gate for the Cowboys.
