2026 Fantasy Outlook
Croskey-Merritt mostly made good on the promise he showed last summer in training camp, where the hot-motor, big-play rookie usurped incumbent Brian Robinson by the end of August. Robinson was not a good starter, but it still speaks volumes for a seventh-round pick like Croskey-Merritt to rapidly secure the coaching staff's favor over a returning veteran starter (who subsequently was traded to San Francisco). Croskey-Merritt reliably created big plays in college at New Mexico and then Arizona, and as a rookie he proved he has the wheels to offer some of the same at the NFL level, breaking off two carries over 40 yards. The challenge for Croskey-Merritt is that he needs to round out his game to project soundly as a starter. When he can't find the big play, he too often goes down with nothing to show on the carry, bouncing around for openings that aren't always there instead of making the most of limited space and pushing the pile forward. Croskey-Merritt also needs to hold on to the ball after fumbling four times in 2025 -- a mostly unacceptable figure over only 184 touches. If Croskey-Merritt can avoid the dud plays, hold on to the ball better and earn his coaches' trust on passing downs, there's no obvious reason why he wouldn't be Washington's lead runner. The team has free-agent signing Rachaad White and Jeremy McNichols to handle passing downs, with sixth-round rookie Kaytron Allen also in the mix for a job, but Chris Rodriguez's departure to Jacksonville could free up more goal-line carries and other power rushing work for Croskey-Merritt. Back at practice
Croskey-Merritt (undisclosed) participated in Tuesday's minicamp practice, John Keim of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Croskey-Merritt missed time during the Commanders' voluntary OTAs due to an unspecified soft-tissue injury. However, the running back returned to the field Tuesday and looking healthy in the process, per Zach Selby of the team's official site. Now that he's back in the mix, Croskey-Merritt -- who logged a team-high 805 rushing yards on 175 carries and nine catches for 68 yards in 17 regular-season games in 2025 -- will look to solidify his key role in a crowded Washington backfield that also includes Rachaad White, Kaytron Allen, Jerome Ford and Jeremy McNichols

2025 Fantasy Outlook
A rookie seventh-round pick, Croskey-Merritt was expected to compete with Chris Rodriguez and Jeremy McNichols for the No. 3 RB job in Washington but may now have a shot at something bigger. The team traded Brian Robinson on Aug. 22, moving forward with Austin Ekeler, Croskey-Merritt, Rodriguez and McNichols in the backfield. Eligibility issues limited Croskey-Merritt to one game at Arizona last year, but he ran for 1,190 yards and 17 touchdowns at New Mexico the year before, and he posted a 4.45 40-yard dash at his pro day this spring. He caught just seven passes in 2023, however, and he enters the NFL as a 24-year-old rookie. If nothing else, the opportunity in Washington is an excellent one, allowing Croskey-Merritt to get his foot in the door immediately.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Bulked up ahead of Year 2
Croskey-Merritt looked noticeably bigger in spring practices, and head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that the team had told the running back to add bulk after Croskey-Merritt's rookie campaign, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Croskey-Merritt led the Commanders with 805 rushing yards during his rookie regular season while being listed at 5-foot-11 and 208 pounds. He's expected to be used as a bruising runner between the tackles, and added mass should help him be effective in that role. Croskey-Merritt didn't show much pass-catching aptitude in his debut campaign, with just nine catches for 68 yards. He sat out the first few spring practices due to a soft-tissue injury but has since returned to join a backfield mix that includes Rachaad White, Kaytron Allen, Jerome Ford, Jeremy McNichols and Robert Henry.
