This article is part of our Target Breakdown series.
I'm trying something new again this week, posting Target Breakdown on Tuesday morning before I've had time to write my notes in the game-by-game breakdowns. I'll add those throughout the day Tuesday as I watch more of the games and pore over more stats. The meat and potatoes of the article is ready for consumption much earlier this way, before everyone has totally moved on to Week 5 (though this article is also quite useful for those who have the 'on to Cincinnati' mindset).
Before we get started, here are a few tweets I found interesting/useful for analyzing Week 4 and/or preparing for Week 5...
Share Comparisons
Below we show target, route and air-yard shares for Week 4, compared to numbers for the season as a whole. Sorting by the delta columns is a quick way to find outliers (or trends... or injuries).
Note: Shares for Kittle, Schultz, Evans, Godwin, Julio, Pierce, Pittman, Lazard, Davis only include the games those players played. I wasn't able to do that for every player who has missed a game, but I did get all the big names.

- He did score his first TD of the year Thursday night, and his snap share somewhat rebounded from a mere 38% four days earlier.

- Olave put up another solid game (67 yards and a TD) in Andy Dalton's first start of the year, with route/target/AY shares right in line with the season-long numbers.
- Michael Thomas (foot) was inactive, along with Jameis Winston (back) and Alvin Kamara (ribs).
- Olave is 17th among WRs in target share and fifth in AY share, and he still leads the league in air yards by nearly 200. Start him every week, even when Thomas is back, though the target share could dip down toward 20% eventually if the Saints get healthier. Even then he'd likely be a WR3 for fantasy.
- Johnson peaked at 78% snap share in Week 2, before dropping to 68% last week and now 49%.
- Tre'Quan Smith (concussion) played but only as the No. 3 receiver (six routes), after topping 100 yards the previous week.

- Wilson's snap and route shares were season highs, while his yardage was a season low.
- Conklin had a decent receiving line (3-52-0) but he's lost some snaps/routes the past couple weeks compared to the first two weeks when Uzomah was injured.
- One of Zach Wilson's TDs went through Conklin's hands. Conklin has three drops and two fumbles this year, and the Jets are paying Uzomah just as much money. You wonder if they'll keep giving Conklin so much playing time...
- The final 30 seconds of the first half was about as "Jets" as it gets... come on now, fellas.
- This game had it all. Interceptions, fumbles, muffed punts, spectacularly failed trick plays, and, most memorably... a roughing the passer penalty on a hail mary that was intercepted by the defense and then had a meaningless 15-second return with multiple laterals, before the penalty gave the ball back to the offense with a chance for a (successful) 59-yard FG. J-E-T-S!
- Davis put up 5-74-1 and now is averaging 3.8 catches for 65.3 yards and 0.5 TDs per game. His target share isn't impressive, but he gets shots downfield and has been catching enough of them.
- Among 95 WRs with double-digit targets, Davis has the sixth-deepest aDOT (16.2). Teammate Elijah Moore is 10th (14.2). Garrett Wilson is middle of the pack (58th, 10.3).

- Johnson sunk to four targets (and 11 yards) after double digits each of the first four weeks. He's still at 29.4% TS for the season, and only 10 WRs have more targets.
- Pickens had season highs across the board. He's progressed each week in terms of his receiving lines... 1-3-0 then 1-23-0 then 3-39-0 and now 6-102-0.
- The rookie's snap share has been 70-85% each week. He already had a full-time role and now is starting to get targets.
- Freiermuth finished with 7-85-0 on nine targets, setting a career high for receiving yardage for the second time this year (he had 75 yards Week 1, after never reaching 60 in a game last year).
- Freiermuth ranks fourth among tight ends in target share, and his 7.3 aDOT is up from 5.8 as a rookie.

- Njoku put up 5-73-0, after 9-89-1 the week before. He was quiet the first two weeks, but he's had an every-down role all year and now has the receiving stats we'd expect of a talented athlete with that role. His 18.7% target share isn't superstar range, by any means, but it'll keep him in play as a mid-to-low TE1 if he maintains it throughout the year.
- Njoku is seventh among TEs in target share and eighth in AY share, plus 11th in route share (with a season high in Week 4).
- In classic Cooper fashion, he now has two games with more than 23 PPR points and two games with less than five. I'm glad I only have him in best ball leagues this year, even if the "inconsistency" narrative has been overblown (which I'm now contributing to... oops).
- Peoples-Jones made a diving catch at the 1-yard line in the second quarter, then got wide open downfield on the next drive but was overthrown by Jacoby Brissett.
- DPJ finished with 5-71-0 and almost had a much bigger day.
- Peoples-Jones now ranks 33rd among WRs in target share and 36th in AY share.

- Marcus Mariota attempted a season-low 19 passes and completed only seven of them. His attempts have dropped with each passing week... 33 > 26 > 20 >19. He'll throw more Week 5 at Tampa Bay, but success is another matter against that defense.
- London is second in the NFL in target share. Pitts ranks fifth among tight ends.
- Pitts lost playing time the past two weeks, playing 67% and 62% of snaps after 84% and 93% in the first two games. Some of that is the difference between negative and neutral/positive game script, but it also seems Pitts' blocking is costing him playing time... most of those plays are runs but some end up being passes.

- Zay Jones (ankle) was inactive, and while Tim Jones took a lot of his usual snaps, it was Agnew who really stepped up with six targets on only 15 routes and a pair of TDs (4-50-2).
- Zay probably won't be out long, but it's worth remembering Agnew if Kirk misses time and the Jags need a slot guy. Agnew had some decent outings in that role last year.
- The Jags ran only 46 plays in this game, while the Eagles had 50 rush attempts. Philly was completely dominant after the first quarter.

- Goedert oddly has seen almost nothing but short targets this year, with his 3.2 aDOT ranking last among tight ends, a huge drop from 8.2 last year. He also has the most YAC, with 210 being second to Austin Ekeler among all players. The 13.1 YAC average isn't sustainable, but neither is Goedert's complete lack of downfield chances. His average route depth (8.5 yards) is still within normal range for a tight end, so there is some hope for more downfield chances. It's something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
- The Eagles had twice as many rush attempts (50) as passes (25). Their passing game has been extremely efficient, but with the defense and rushing attack also working well the Eagles haven't been pass-heavy.

- Duvernay still hasn't seen more than five targets in a game this year, but he's certainly been efficient and should get more volume if Bateman misses time.
- That said, Duvernay played only 56% of snaps in the second half, compared to 81% for Demarcus Robinson. I wouldn't trust any of them, and I'm not sure how much I trust Bateman given that his usage is so far behind Andrews and so much of his production came on one huge play (the 75-yard slant he housed against Miami).

- Alie-Cox ran more routes than usual and exploded for 6-85-2 on six targets, but he still played only 54% of snaps in 11 personnel and 57% on third down.
- That's not to totally throw water on MAC fans, but we need the performance to translate into a growing role. He won't put up many big games unless he keeps building on this usage.
- Pierce put up 4-80-0. He hasn't gotten much buzz, but he's a rookie second-round pick with great measureables and great reports coming out of training camp. The Colts' passing game stinks so far, but they could give Pierce more of Campbell's snaps as the year moves along. Right now the playing time rotation is tough on everyone besides Pittman.

- Moore had an every-down role in his season debut, though he caught just three of five targets for only 11 yards. The good news? Both his incomplete targets came on throws more than 20 yards downfield... something he rarely saw last year (those passes accounted for just four of his 70 targets as a rookie, per PFF).
- Brown got double-digit targets for a third straight week and scored more than a dozen PPR points for a fourth consecutive game to start the season, including two in a row now with 20-plus.
- Dortch was merely the No. 3 receiver with Moore back, and even lost some of those snaps to Isabella.... who then was released Tuesday.
- Dortch didn't get a single snap in 12 personnel, which accounted for 30 of Arizona's 73 snaps in this one.
- McBride, the second-round pick, got a good bit of playing time, but mostly a blocker (six routes, three targets). Ertz still dominated the routes (30), and put up 6-47-1 on six targets.

- TE Ian Thomas played 12 snaps in the first quarter and only two the rest of the day. He'd played at least 62% in each of Carolina's first three games. An injury seems likely, though not certain.
- Tremble got six targets, and caught three for 34 yards, but he split snaps with the H-back Ricci still.
- Moore finally got No. 1 volume after three straight games with six targets, but he was held to 6-50-0 plus an 11-yard carry. He's played all but five of Carolina's offensive snaps this season... which has been 61 or fewer each week because the offense can't keep possessions going.

- Jonnu Smith left with an ankle injury, but Henry nonetheless spent much of his day blocking, often kept in on pass plays. Still, a Smith absence would open the door a nudge for Henry.

Either way, it was like the good ol'days with Tom Brady heavily targeting Mike Evans (103 yards, two TDs) and Chris Godwin (who handled 85% route share in his first game back from a hamstring injury).
- Jones saw 32% route share and two targets as the No. 4 receiver.
- Brate was targeted eight times on 20 routes before exiting with a concussion and handing things over to Otton, a fourth-round rookie.
- Brate played 73% of snaps in the first half. He could have some value when he comes back from the concussion.

- We may just have to accept that Higbee, not Robinson, is the No. 2 pass catcher here. In my case, I'll accept it with glee, having drafted the former often and the latter barely at all across a couple hundred best ball teams :)

- Snap/Route shares are normal all-around, and it likely would've been a rough night for all the SF pass catchers if not for Deebo's incredible play to take a short pass to the end zone.
- Kittle's snap and route shares are fine. He's not losing that many snaps to pass blocking; he's just not being targeted on a ton of routes, and the Niners aren't chucking it around. Kittle will still have a few big games this year, but it might require negative game script. He had a lot of stinkers in Niners wins even last year.
