2026 Fantasy Outlook
Cease has at times looked like an ace over the past few seasons, but he's been inconsistent from one year to the next. That was especially true in 2025, as the right-hander finished with a 4.55 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 215:71 K:BB over 168 innings after posting a 3.47 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 2024. Despite the disappointing results in 2025, Cease's underlying numbers were encouraging with a 3.56 xFIP and 3.46 xERA, with his 29.8 percent strikeout rate being his best mark since 2022. He's struck out at least 200 batters and made at least 32 starts in five straight seasons. Despite the volatility of his run prevention, Cease has been one of the more reliable starting pitchers in MLB in regard to durability and strikeouts, which gives him the upside of a top-end starter if he's able to perform closer to his expected figures in 2026. Joining the Blue Jays and having an elite defense behind him should help him to achieve those expected numbers. Read Past Outlooks
Plays catch Tuesday
Cease (hamstring) was able to play light catch Tuesday, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
While Cease's ability to play catch one day after landing on the injured list is an encouraging sign, the Blue Jays likely won't have a good feel for how much time his strained left hamstring will keep him on the shelf until he resumes taking part in fielding and running drills. For his part, Cease has optimism that he'll be in line for a minimum-length stay on the IL, which could allow him to return to the Toronto rotation as soon as June 9.

Cease had an up-and-down career through five years with the White Sox, but he delivered on his potential in 2024 after being traded to the Padres and posted a 3.47 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 224:65 K:BB over a career-high 189.1 innings. The right-hander had a career-best 8.5 percent walk rate, while a 29.4 percent strikeout rate ranked fifth best among qualified starting pitchers. He's entering his age-30 campaign and should be San Diego's ace in his final year of arbitration eligibility in 2025. Cease seems unlikely to recreate the 2.20 ERA from 2021 that resulted in a second-place finish in Cy Young voting since he significantly outperformed his peripherals that year, but he should continue to be a high-value fantasy starter in 2025 given his strikeout floor.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might be top target for Cubs
Cease could emerge as the top pitching target for the Cubs in free agency, according to Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.
Analysis
The Cubs are expected to be in the mix for several top pitchers, including Michael King and Tatsuya Imai, but signing Cease might be the team's top priority. Given that Chicago seems open to signing a player attached to a qualifying offer and paying the draft costs that come with that, Cease could stand out ahead of the other options given his durability and above-average ability to miss bats.
