Target Breakdown: Week 12 WR/TE Recap & Week 13 Sleepers

It was a brutal week for injuries, and while big-name RBs may get most of the attention, TE arguably was hit just as hard given the shaky depth at the position. That last part is arguably less true this year than it was the past few seasons, but the not-as-think ranks are now thinning out with Darren Waller (knee), Pat Freiermuth (concussion) and Dan Arnold (knee) all picking up new injuries.

That said, none of the four teams on bye in Week 13 has provided much fantasy utility at tight end, and after that we'll have just one more week with missing teams (IND, MIA, NE, PHI in Week 14... my condolences to anyone with Jonathan Taylor on bye for a playoff matchup). We'll focus on WRs and TEs below, so check out sister article Backfield Breakdown (published every Monday) if you want details on what the Panthers did post-CMac or how the Lions handled their backfield without D'Andre Swift (among other things). Now let's look at the pass catchers....

Mooney went over 100 yards for the second straight week and third time this season, finishing with 5-123-0 on eight targets with gains of 52 and 33 yards.
- Mooney has seen 30 of Andy Dalton's 109 targets (27.5%), 11 more than any other player (Kmet has 19, catching 14 for only 119 yards and no TD). Robinson missing the past two weeks is obviously a big factor, though.
  - Mooney has seen the same percentage of Justin Fields' targets (27.5%). And with very similar numbers per target
    - 17-253-1, 8.4 YPT on 30 targets from Dalton
    - 29-441-2, 8.3 YPT on 53 targets from Fields.
Allen Robinson (hamstring) was out for a second straight game, and Goodwin — who put up 4-104-1 on 71% of snaps the week before — saw just one incomplete target on 67% of snaps through the third quarter of Thursday's game. Goodwin then missed the fourth quarter with a foot injury.
- Byrd also took 67% of snaps through the third quarter, and then 96% in the fourth. He finished with 4-42-0 on five targets.
Kmet led the team in targets and finished second in routes, putting up 8-65-0 to rebound from a 1-12-0 line the week before (on two targets and 90% snap share).

St. Brown moved into an every-down role, rather than just handling slot work in three-wide formations (his role for most of the season).
- St. Brown played 11 of 12 snaps (92%) in 21/12 personnel (two-wide), after getting 62% of those snaps in Week 11.
  - Prior to Week 11, he'd taken just 8% of Detroit's snaps in those two-wide formations.
  - He didn't do much with the extra snaps/routes, however, catching four of four targets for 23 years. And each of the four targets came in 11 personnel... The four passes in 21/12 went to Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond, who split snaps. Still, this is good news for St. Brown.
Hockenson made the most of his three targets with a 3-35-1 receiving line, but his snaps dropped to 76%, the first time this year below 80% in a non-blowout (he got 94% and 88% the two previous games).
- Probably not a concern, as he still got 81% route share.
Reynolds put up 3-70-1 on five targets and 88% of snaps, after finishing with 0-0-0 on three targets and 90% of snaps (he did have two tackles!) the week before.
Raymond is still playing a comfortable majority of snaps, but he's slipped to co-No. 2 in terms of playing time (and targets), whereas at one point he was the de facto No. 1, averaging 5.6 targets over the first seven weeks.
- He's still played at least 63% of snaps in every game, and is averaging 3.0 catches for 34.5 yards overall.

Waller left in the second quarter with a hip injury. Interim coach Rich Bisaccia called him "week to week", hinting at missed time.
Moreau played 95% of snaps after the first quarter but caught only one of five targets for three yards.
- Moreau put up 6-60-1 on six targets and 100% snap share when Waller missed Week 7 against the Eagles.
Renfrow had career highs in catches and yards, and matched a career high with nine targets.
- He's never seen 10 targets in a game, but has eight games with exactly nine, including four this year.
  - He also has three games this year with eight targets, and is averaging 7.5 per game without every hitting double digits.
The 72% snap share for Edwards was his smallest since Week 1. Maybe because he has four catches over the past four games... on 130 routes. Yikes.
- Jackson had the long TD and finished with 3-102-1 on four targets and 48% of snaps.
  - A big improvement from 17% and 34% of snaps with one total target in his first two games with the Raiders. He might get more of Edwards' playing time moving forward...
- Jones put up 5-59-0 on seven targets, his first game all year with more than two catches or four targets.
  - But his fourth game in a row with at least two-thirds of snaps... and it's declined each week, from 96% to 85% to 72% to 69%. Uber-deep-leaguers beware! D-Jax is coming from those Zay/Edwards snaps (which might actually involve targets if Waller misses time).

Knox made the most of three targets with a 3-32-2 receiving line, one week after putting up 6-80-0 on 10 targets.
- Know has played 84%, 98% and 91% of snaps in three games since returning from a hand injury, averaging 3.3 catches for 43.0 yards and 0.67 TDs on 4.7 targets.
  - He averaged 3.5 for 47.7 yards and 0.83 TDs on 4.5 targets in six games before the injury. So, similar story -- decent volume, awesome efficiency.
Diggs scored his sixth TD in the past six games, finishing with 7-74-1 on a team-high nine targets (nobody else saw more than five).
- His target share is up to 24.9%, 14th in the league.

- Humphrey's involvement the past two weeks has been new, and it may stick given that he's caught four of six targets for 51 yards and a TD in that stretch (also, competition for playing time isn't exactly fierce).
The Saints largely operated from three-wide formations with TE Adam Trautman (IR/knee) out of the picture (I won't show the exact personnel stats, because they're hard to sort out with Montgomery playing a position he isn't listed at).
- Juwan Johnson didn't get any targets, but 55% route share was a season high. He split TE snaps with Nick Vannett (37%) and Garrett Griffin (33%).
Montgomery is listed here, but he took nearly all his snaps in the backfield, sharing work with Tony Jones.

Washington and Miller split the No. 3 WR role 50/50, combining for only three targets.
- Pittsburgh took 50 of 62 snaps in 11 personnel, a throwback to past years.
  - Extreme negative game script + TE injuries = much 11*.
    - *But still no targets for the No. 3 receiver.
This is the third week in a row where I've mentioned that Diontae Johnson has double-digit targets in all but two games this season, and double-digit PPR points in every contest.
- I'll say it again next week too. It keeps being true.
Claypool is averaging 13.0 more yards per game than he did last year. But man, it doesn't feel like it, with only one TD from 608 receiving yards (and 52 rushing yards).

Cam Newton was benched for P.J. Walker early in the fourth quarter. Personally, I'd rather have Walker in there if I'm counting on a Carolina pass catcher (yikes). Not that he's even decent, but at least he doesn't run the ball on every snap inside the 5-yard line.

Long, a third-round rookie out of BC, made his fourth appearance of the year and first since Week 6, replacing Adam Shaheen (inactive/knee) as the No. 3 TE. Long has one target (incomplete) on 53 snaps.

Sharpe has played 57% of snaps or more in five straight games, and has topped two receptions or 22 yards just once in that span (the first of the five games).

- O'Shaughnessy, suiting up for the first time since Week 2 after a nasty high-ankle sprain, ended up handling a three-down role with 82% snap share, 79% route share and 12% target share.
Talk about retreads. Austin scored his first few TD in a few years, but it was actually Treadwell (the 2016 Vikings' first-round pick) who took on a full-time role after Jamal Agnew's season-ending hip injury last week.
- Shenault saw nine targets, his most since Week 6, but he finished with only 5-33-0 and right in his usual snap range, despite shifting back to the slot after playing outside more Weeks 5-10.
  - Per PFF, Shenault took 41 of his 53 snaps in the slot, after getting no more than 18 slot snaps in each of the previous six games.

- Cobb leads the NFL with 11 targets inside the 10-yard line. (He has only 39 targets overall, tied for 114th among all players.
  - If Cobb misses time, it could help Davante Adams in addition to the guys who pick up more snaps (MVS, Lazard).
Before his exit around the two-minute warning of the first half, Cobb took 68% of snaps in 11 personnel, with MVS at 64% and Lazard at 46%.
- Over the final 32 minutes, Lazard got 93% in 11 and MVS got 26%.
- In 12 personnel, MVS got 50% and Lazard only 22% (with ESB at 28%).
Bye coming up in Week 13, giving Cobb extra time to heal.

- Hard to say how the 49ers will replace Deebo (in terms of snaps AND touches), given his unique role.
  - I mostly think Aiyuk and Kittle benefit. And Aiyuk put up 3-91-0 on six targets in this one, following 7-85-1 the week before in Jacksonville.

Bryant, the No. 3 TE, had a nice night with 3-50-0 on three targets, but he left the game late with a high-ankle sprain, potentially knocking him out for the rest of the season.
- Njoku's route share was down a bit in this one, but he finished with 3-35-1 on five targets, and there's now another factor working in favor of him and Hooper getting routes/targets, in addition to the lack of talent at WR.
Landry finally put up some receiving yards (6-111-0) but is still averaging only 4.5 catches for 46 yards on 7.7 targets since returning from IR. The volume is there, but both he and Baker Mayfield are fighting through injuries (and they aren't exactly Moss/Brady in the first place).
- Landry's snap/route shares also were season highs.
The Browns lost RT Jack Conklin (patella) to a season-ending injury in his first game back from an IR stint due to an elbow injury. Swing tackle Chris Hubbard (pectoral) is already out for the year, so Blake Hance is back in the lineup. Hance has PFF's No. 63 out of 81 OTs, making him the obvious weak link on an otherwise stellar line.

Apart from Hollywood, the WR snap shares tumbled with everyone healthy and the Ravens shifting toward heavier sets (they went three/four-wide on only 34 of 80 snaps).
- In 3/4-wide looks, the snaps went to Brown (89%), Duvernay (86%), Watkins (69%) and then Bateman (46%).
- For two-wide, it was Brown (89%), Bateman (67%) Watkins (33%) and Duvernay (11%).
- One-wide snaps (15) were split between Brown (six), Tylan Wallace (three) and Bateman/Watkins/Duvernay (two each).
This looked a little like the Miami game for Brown, with Cleveland taking away the deep ball and encouraging the Ravens to settle for short passes on the perimeter.
The snap and routes shares for Bateman were his lowest yet, supporting fears that Watkins' return would take a big chunk out of the rookie's volume.
- In two games with Brown, Watkins, Duvernay and Bateman all healthy, Bateman has 50% snap share and 16% target share.
  - Watkins is at 38% and 6%, respectively
  - Duvernay is 52% and 8%
  - Hollywood is 76% and 32%, but with only 14-88-0 on 23 looks.
  - Andrews is 73% and 25%
    - Remember... small samples here. The big takeaway is just that Bateman is splitting snaps/routes with Watkins, a big problem even if he's playing well.

- Samuel took two touches for 13 yards, and appears to have survived.
