Fortes was one of the trio catchers in Miami who allowed opposing baserunners to run wild against the club. Catchers can only control so much, but the fact Fortes was dealt mid-season provided us with a control group. Fortes threw out 15% of baserunners with the Marlins but upped that rate to 23% after being dealt to the Rays so we get a feeling of how much of that thievery should be blamed on the pitching staff. The rest of Fortes's game behind the plate is very good, and given how much the Rays value defensive skills at catcher, Fortes is going to see a lot more playing time than the natural righty-lefty platoon of he and Hunter Feduccia would lead you to believe to be true. Neither guy is much of a hitter, and defense always wins out with Tampa Bay, so give Fortes 75% of the playing time in this situation barring injury. Fortes made 99 starts at catcher for the Marlins in 2024 and remains dependable as ever in the field, but his .577 OPS was only a marginal improvement on his 2023 figure. The 28-year-old's bat was never a strength in the minors either, so a major turnaround shouldn't be expected after he posted a .216/.261/.309 slash line over the past two years. Fortes' work behind the plate should help him retain a roster spot given the need for stability at the position, but Miami is likely to test out their options at catcher in 2025. Liam Hicks was selected in the Rule 5 Draft, while prospect Agustin Ramirez appears close to making his MLB debut.
