Nick Fortes

Nick Fortes

28-Year-Old CatcherC
Miami Marlins
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Fortes made 99 starts at catcher for the Marlins in 2024 and remains dependable as ever in the field, but his .577 OPS was only a marginal improvement on his 2023 figure. The 28-year-old's bat was never a strength in the minors either, so a major turnaround shouldn't be expected after he posted a .216/.261/.309 slash line over the past two years. Fortes' work behind the plate should help him retain a roster spot given the need for stability at the position, but Miami is likely to test out their options at catcher in 2025. Liam Hicks was selected in the Rule 5 Draft, while prospect Agustin Ramirez appears close to making his MLB debut. Read Past Outlooks

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The 27-year-old held a small edge in playing time over Jacob Stalling behind the plate for Miami last season, and Stallings has since been let go. Fortes ended up playing in 108 games and had a .204/.263/.299 slash line, which is a sharp drop from the .696 OPS he posted in 2022. He still provided a strong presence behind the plate, which should give him a strong chance at sticking with the big club for 2024. Fortes was never a major offensive threat during his minor-league career, so he seems unlikely to break out and become a solid option for fantasy managers. Christian Bethancourt was acquired in December and is a likely bet to split catching work.
Fortes saw his first extended action in the majors last season and had a .230/.304/.392 slash line in 72 games. He hit nine home runs and stole five bases, the latter of which is surprising given he entered the campaign with just eight steals in his professional career. Fortes should open 2023 in a backup role behind Jacob Stallings, but he could see a larger share of playing time if Stallings continues to struggle after he posted a .584 OPS in 2022.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely back for 2024
CMiami Marlins
October 6, 2023
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald speculates Fortes will remain with the Marlins in 2024 as a backup catcher.
ANALYSIS
Fortes and Jacob Stallings split most of the catching work for the Marlins in 2023, but neither backstop provided much value offensively. Stallings is a candidate to be non-tendered this offseason, while Fortes' pre-arbitration salary should allow him to stick around as a potential backup. The 26-year-old struggled to a .204/.263/.299 slash line in 108 games, but it appears he'll have another chance with the big club in 2024.
