Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
All the projection systems absolutely nailed Simpson's 2025 home run total, so kudos on that! Simpson was twice promoted to the big league club and was as fast as advertised, successfully stealing 44 bases in 56 attempts when he managed to get on base. Pitchers had absolutely no fear of challenging him with fastballs, because they knew he could not hit home runs, so pitchers did not care Simpson hit .310 off fastballs or even .326 off breaking pitches. Since he saw so many strikes, he rarely walked, so he had to earn his way on base with either very soft contact to holes in the defense or solid line drives. Simpson's limitations leave him in the nine-hole of the lineup, and his defensive struggles put his playing time at risk. As it were, the Rays just had one of the worst single-season home run totals for outfielders in recent memory, so it is unclear how the likes of Simpson, Jonny Deluca, Jake Mangum, and Kameron Misner all co-exist moving forward. This could be another version of Esteury Ruiz if the defense does not improve. Read Past Outlooks
Records fifth steal
Simpson went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Cubs.
Analysis
Simpson has hit safely in 11 of 12 games so far this season, and he's been in the starting lineup for every game after being on the bench Opening Day. He's bounced around the lineup but has seemingly settled into the No. 5 hole over the last three games, though he could hit lower in the lineup if he gets consistent time against southpaws. So far, he's earned the starting job in left field, batting .391 with five stolen bases, one triple, one RBI and five runs scored over 49 plate appearances. He hasn't hit a home run in his career, so he's purely a speed option in fantasy. Simpson stole 44 bases on 56 attempts as a rookie in 2025.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Simpson opened the year at High-A Bowling Green and hit .364 with zero homers and 31 steals in 32 games. He put up similar numbers (.351/.401/.407 slash line, 73 steals) in 78 games at Double-A, while notching an inside-the-park home run for his lone four-bagger of the year. Simpson's traditional fantasy stats are alluring at first glance, but he has some very real flaws that could prevent him from playing regularly in the majors. His 13.1 percent hard-hit rate is one of the worst rates in the minors, and Simpson hit 55.9 percent of balls on the ground and 44.4 percent of balls to the opposite field at Double-A, so there's no evidence of even five-homer power emerging. He is more along the lines of Mallex Smith or Esteury Ruiz on defense, where he's a subpar defensive outfielder despite elite foot speed. The Rays like quirky players with elite strengths, and Simpson is arguably the fastest player in the minors, but his shaky defense could end up being the most relevant aspect of his scouting report.
