Analyzing NHL Time on Ice PrizePicks Plays

Card Overview: This is not an ideal card tonight, as there is only one building block, and it's not a great one. There are some good options, but overall, I would tread lightly with this card unless you have a strong feeling about how the script dependent games will go.

BUILDING BLOCKS

Rasmus Dahlin 25.5 at Montreal Canadians - 7:00 p.m. ET (MORE)

Dahlin is the lead dog for the Buffalo defense, but after a somewhat slow start to his ice time this season, it's really picked up lately. Earlier in the season, Dahlin was dependent on game script, but lately he's been getting his minutes even with a lead. Buffalo is the underdog in this game, giving us some room for error. With a trail script, Dahlin flies over this number, but as long as the game is close, he should go over, no matter which team takes the early lead.

INJURY DEPENDENT

Charlie McAvoy 23.25 vs. Vegas Golden Knights - 7:00 p.m. ET (MORE)

This play is dependent on the status of Henri Jokiharju. Jokiharju was placed on the non-roster list Sunday, and he missed the team's most recent game in Dallas. Boston is one of the more balanced teams in terms of minutes for their defenders, but Jokiharju will generally play more than his replacement, which opens up some minutes for McAvoy. McAvoy did not go over his number in Dallas on Tuesday, but he was on pace until the Stars turned the game into a blowout. If Jokiharju is out again tonight, McAvoy makes for a nice play.

Noah Hanifin 21.25 at Boston Bruins - 7:00 p.m. ET (MORE)

This play is dependent on Rasmus Andersson making his debut for the Golden Knights tonight. It originally looked like he'd be ready to go, but as of 2:00 p.m. EST, it looks like he won't debut tonight, as he wasn't on the ice for the morning skate. Hanifin is not generally a big minutes guy, but his ice time usually increases when any of the top defensemen leave the lineup. Zach Whitecloud was shipped in the Andersson trade and Brayden McNabb is out through the Olympics, which means Vegas will rely heavily on Hanifin and Shea Theodore until Andersson comes on board.

SCRIPT DEPENDENT

I won't spend as much time on these plays because they're mostly dependent on the game script going in their favor. However, these picks can be used to fill out your plays if needed. I'll only put players in this category if the script is supposed to be in their favor.

Zach Werenski 26.5 vs. Dallas Stars - 7:00 p.m. ET (MORE)

Werenski's minutes have risen in Denton Mateychuk's absence. Mateychuk should be out until the weekend, which means Werenski should go over if Columbus is trailing in this game. There's also a chance Werenski goes over if the game is tight the whole way.

Quinn Hughes 28.75 vs. Detroit Red Wings - 8:30 p.m. ET (LESS)

I'll start by stating that Hughes is almost always script dependent. When his team is trailing he plays a lot, it's not unheard of to top 30 minutes, but if his team is in the lead, or if they spend a good amount of time on the penalty kill, his minutes shrink. Considering the Wild are heavy favorites tonight, there's a decent chance they'll be in the lead at some point. If that happens, Hughes should find his way under, as this line is about as high as they come.
