2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Jones filled in for an injured Brock Purdy in eight games last season, securing five wins for the 49ers as a starter while completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Statistically, he delivered the strongest stretch of his NFL career under head coach Kyle Shanahan, thriving within San Francisco’s quarterback-friendly system. While the 49ers will likely prioritize keeping Jones as a valuable insurance policy behind Purdy, his resurgence could also make him an appealing trade target for teams seeking a potential late-blooming starter in the mold of Sam Darnold. If called upon again in 2026, Jones has shown he can keep San Francisco’s offense operating near – or at – full capacity. Read Past Outlooks

Resumes throwing
Jones, who dealt with a sore shoulder during the 49ers' spring program, threw passes this week at Tight End University, an event hosted by teammate George Kittle (Achilles), David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
The fact that Jones was out there throwing this week suggests that Brock Purdy's top backup should be good to go come training camp. Though there was some speculation this offseason that Jones could be on the move, he'll remain a valuable insurance policy at QB for the 49ers, on the heels of a 2025 regular season in which Purdy missed eight games, all of which Jones started in his place.

The 49ers signed Jones to serve as the team's backup after passing on the prospect early in the 2021 NFL Draft. San Francisco didn't appear to miss much from the Alabama product after he threw 54 touchdowns to 44 interceptions in his first four years as a pro. Jones hopes to follow in the path of fellow failed prospect Sam Darnold, who flipped his opportunity as Brock Purdy's backup in 2023 into a career renaissance the following year after linking up with QB guru Kyle Shanahan.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could still be dealt
Jones could be viewed as expendable by the 49ers if 2025 seventh-round pick Kurtis Rourke impresses in training camp, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Rourke spent his rookie season recovering from an ACL tear, but now that he's healthy he will get a real opportunity to show he can follow in the footsteps of Brock Purdy as a late-round success story for Kyle Shanahan's ability to develop quarterbacks. The 49ers set an astronomical price tag on Jones in trade talks earlier this offseason, but if they feel they have a credible replacement in Rourke as Purdy's backup, GM John Lynch could finally decide to deal him.
