2026 Fantasy Outlook
If the high points in Irving's 2024 rookie season were unsustainable, the low points in his challenging 2025 season involved instances of bad luck that are unlikely to persist once he finishes up his rehab from offseason shoulder surgery. Irving was particularly productive in the second half of his rookie season, but at 5-foot-10, 195, he may not be suited for huge workloads long-term. Unlike other sub-200-pound RBs like James Cook, Kyren Williams or De'Von Achane, Irving shows little interest in avoiding contact, running with a fearlessness that opens him up to punishment. He averaged 17.3 carries per game last season, similar to his late-2024 usage, but it might ultimately be better for the Buccaneers to make Irving a 15-carry back instead of trying to get him 20 totes per week. The addition of Kenneth Gainwell in free agency suggests as much, with Gainwell an obvious threat to handle both change-of-pace carries and passing-down work, even though Irving has also excelled as a receiver (7.7 YPT on 87 career targets). The nightmare scenario for Irving's fantasy value would be one where Gainwell gets most of the targets and No. 3 back Sean Tucker steals short-yardage touchdowns. The other major concern for Irving's fantasy value is that he seemingly didn't have shoulder surgery until the spring, which could mean limited practice availability in the lead-up to the regular season. Spotted at OTA practice
Irving (shoulder) was on the field for Thursday's OTA.
ANALYSIS
A clip posted by the Buccaneers showed the running back getting in some on-field work Thursday, which included catching passes. It remains to be seen when Irving will be cleared for full contact as he bounces back from offseason shoulder surgery, but his participation in Thursday's session, in any capacity, supports a previous report by ESPN's Adam Schefter that the 2024 fourth-rounder was likely to be ready at some point during training camp. Next up for Irving and his teammates following their current OTAs will be mandatory minicamp from June 16-18.

Size-adjusted athleticism is generally an important variable when evaluating NFL running back prospects, so despite excellent production in college it was a major strike to Irving's draft stock when he logged poor workout numbers last spring at just 192 pounds (4.55-second 40, 29.5-inch vertical, 115-inch broad jump). There are exceptions to every rule, though, and while other running backs might have failed with his athletic profile, there's something unique about Irving that allows him to transcend the otherwise concerning indicators in his testing. His strong skill set was always clear at the collegiate level, where he stood out for both Minnesota and Oregon before the Buccaneers made him a fourth-round pick last spring. The main limitation with Irving pertains to his usage upside rather than his per-touch effectiveness. Playing at 192 pounds hasn't deprived Irving of the power necessary to thrive between the tackles, but it remains to be seen whether he can physically hold up as a workhorse. Irving went over 20 carries in a game just twice in college, so it might be asking a lot for him to maintain the rushing workload he shouldered in his final six healthy games of 2024 (18.8 carries per game).
