The Falcons picked up the fifth-year option of Robinson's rookie contract Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The transaction keeps Robinson under contract through 2027 and provides Atlanta more time to negotiate a potential long-term extension, so it's little surprise to see the team pick up the 2023 first-round pick's fifth-year option. Robinson has compiled back-to-back years with over 1,400 rushing yards, and in 2025 he added a 79-829-4 receiving line (104 targets) while suiting up for all 17 regular-season games. The star running back also had seven rushing scores and a career-high 5.1 YPC mark in 2025. Even given the uncertainty surrounding Atlanta's offense -- there's a QB battle between Michael Penix (knee) and Tua Tagovailoa looming this offseason, and the surprise retirement of RT Kaleb McGary (leg) has prompted the team to sign Jawaan Taylor -- Robinson is firmly in the mix for consideration as not only the top RB off the board in 2026 fantasy drafts, but as the No.1 overall selection.

Robinson was a rock in 2024 and demonstrated league-leading fantasy upside, crossing the rare combined threshold of 300 carries and 60 receptions, with plus efficiency both as a runner and receiver. That he accomplished this even in a somewhat dysfunctional Atlanta offense makes it worth pondering what Robinson might do if the Falcons were to improve. Even if things don't get better with Michael Penix at quarterback, Robinson already demonstrated in 2024 that he doesn't need good luck to compete for the RB1 distinction in fantasy. Robinson has produced with uncommon efficiency and elusiveness despite facing crowded boxes, pushing for 5.0 YPC even while having just five carries of more than 20 yards. Robinson has yet to log a 40-yard carry in the NFL — a trend that seems unlikely to persist given the abundance of other explosive indicators. He has the speed to split safeties (4.46 40) and the size (5-foot-11, 215 pounds) to run them over, and he's already shown a volume ceiling that few backs can match. Adding a few more big plays on similar volume might be enough to make Robinson the top scorer for fantasy in any given year.
Tyler Allgeier is a good running back, but it wasn't reasonable for Robinson to only see 214 carries to Allgeier's 186 carries last season. Atlanta team ownership presumably agreed, because previous head coach Arthur Smith was fired and the new coach Raheem Morris likely has an understanding that Robinson's inconsistent 2023 usage was a big reason Smith was fired. If Robinson's rushing workload increases then it could hold explosive results for his fantasy value, especially with Kirk Cousins arriving at quarterback. Robinson is already one of the league's better pass catchers at running back (86 targets last year) yet his efficiency numbers were badly dragged down by Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke. Robinson will likely improve on the 67.4 percent catch rate and 5.8 yards per target figure he had last year, and if that occurs at the same time as a rushing production surge then Robinson would have a clear path to finish the 2024 season not just as a fantasy RB1 in general, but maybe even the top fantasy back in the entire NFL.
Robinson is the consensus RB1 of the 2023 rookie class and arrives to the NFL with a fantasy-friendly skill set. He has a workhorse build at 215-plus pounds, and with a 4.46-second 40 Robinson has the speed to create big plays at a standout frequency. Not just that, but Robinson appears adept as a pass catcher and could do more as an NFL receiver than he did at Texas. While Robinson's single-season high for receptions at Texas was just 26, there's reason to think that in the NFL Robinson could be a 60-catch candidate annually. It's not often that a running back prospect projects for volume, efficiency and versatility to the extent that Robinson does -- and his status as the eighth overall pick further confirms that. He does have decent competition for carries in Atlanta, but within the confines of a run-heavy offense and with the possibility of Cordarrelle Patterson being a cap casualty this summer. While 2022 fifth-round pick Tyler Allgeier figures to retain some sort of role after running for 1,000 yards as a rookie, Robinson is on a different level of talent and shouldn't need long to establish himself as the lead back.

ANALYSIS
The move was a mere formality, and reports from earlier this offseason indicate the Falcons and the star running back are aiming to get a long-term extension completed before the 2026 season. Robinson was fourth in the league last season with 1,478 rushing yards on his way to a team-high 2,298 scrimmage yards, the latter a franchise record. Robinson is arguably in line to become the league's highest-paid running back whenever he does sign his long-term deal.
