2024 Fantasy Outlook
Dalton returns to Carolina this season to back up and mentor second-year QB Bryce Young. Last season, Dalton started one game for an injured Young and passed for 361 yards -- more than Young totaled in any game -- and two touchdowns -- matched by Young just once last season. Like last year, Dalton won’t have much help if pressed into action again, though the Panthers acquired wideout Diontae Johnson this offseason and drafted Xavier Legette, who has 4.39 speed, in the first round. The hiring of head coach Dave Canales, the former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator who turned Baker Mayfield into a viable QB last season, should benefit whoever’s under center. If it’s Dalton, he’ll offer a steady veteran hand, but that might not be enough for a QB2 fantasy role, especially considering he lacks rushing upside. Read Past Outlooks

Practices in full, won't start
Dalton (thumb) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After injuring his thumb in a car accident last week, Dalton was inactive for this past Sunday's loss to the Broncos, which opened the door for second-year quarterback Bryce Young to make his first start since Week 2. Though the veteran now appears to be fully recovered from the thumb injury, Panthers head coach Dave Canales said that Young will continue to start over Dalton in a Week 9 matchup with the Saints, per Joe Person of The Athletic. Dalton will likely be active Sunday, but in the backup role he had filled in Weeks 1 and 2.

Dalton signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Panthers this offseason after spending the 2022 campaign with the division-rival Saints. Despite losing a preseason competition to Jameis Winston, Dalton became New Orleans' starter Week 4 and never relinquished the job. In 14 appearances, he completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,871 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. With Carolina, the 35-year-old is slated to occupy a full-time backup role, as the team drafted quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall pick this spring. Should the diminutive Young struggle with durability, Dalton represents an experienced insurance policy, but he otherwise doesn't figure to see the field much.

Expected No. 2 quarterback Sunday
Dalton, who missed the Panthers' Week 8 loss to the Broncos with a thumb sprain suffered in a car accident, is expected to serve as the No. 2 quarterback in Sunday's game against the Saints, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran signal-caller was expected to practice in full Wednesday, but head coach Dave Canales pre-emptively named Bryce Young the starter for Sunday's game. The first-year head coach noted he was not only "taking the decision out of Andy's hands" so as to protect the quarterback from himself, but added he also was looking forward to giving Young an opportunity to build on a relatively effective Week 8 performance.
