Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
France, once again, found more playing time than his skills likely deserve as organizations continue to see whether he can repeat his 2022 production levels. Seattle gave up, Cincinnati tried, as did the Twins before France ended up in Toronto at the deadline this past season. France is one again a free agent and hopes to land a deal with a club looking for a veteran presence at first base or DH or a short-sided platoon situation with a contending club. His production at first base is below replacement level for fantasy purposes, but it is tough to ignore the playing time he has collected since 2021. Mono leagues hoard plate appearances, so in that situation, France is a fine CI option late in drafts or in reserves. Read Past Outlooks
Drawing start at first base
France will start at first base and bat seventh in Friday's game versus the Tigers.
Analysis
After the lefty-swinging Gavin Sheets started at first base Opening Day against southpaw Tarik Skubal, the Padres will go with the right-handed-hitting France versus lefty Framber Valdez. San Diego is expected to give Sheets plenty of run at first base against lefties this season, but France and Nick Castellanos will also be in the mix at the position.

France's numbers have been in steady decline and he faces an uncertain future in Major League Baseball. The Mariners designated him for assignment in July, a little over two years after he represented Seattle in the All-Star game. Tough business. Cincinnati brought him in and France took advantage of the comfy confines of Great American Ball Park to boost his batting average, but it was a largely forgettable run nonetheless. His limited defensive utility puts a ton of pressure on his bat. When he's not hitting, it becomes tough to justify keeping him on a big-league roster. He'll compete for a platoon role at first base this spring after signing with the Twins.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Roster situation unclear
The Padres have yet to make a decision on whether France will make the Opening Day roster, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Analysis
The Padres are looking to make final roster decisions, and when it comes to adding a bench bat, they are torn between keeping France or minor-league signee Jose Miranda. France slashed .257/.320/.360 with seven home runs over 138 regular-season games between the Twins and Blue Jays in 2025, and he has arguably shown enough in spring training to earn a roster spot ahead of Opening Day.
