2026 Fantasy Outlook
Espinal hung a goose egg in the HR column in 2025 after totaling a career-high nine homers the year prior. He also went from 11 steals to just two last season, losing all fantasy utility. Meanwhile, his .575 OPS was third lowest among the 277 players that logged at least 300 plate appearances. Espinal remained a slight positive on defense while playing mostly between second and third base, but in the end, his poor offense dragged him down below replacement level. The Reds outrighted him off the 40-man roster in October and the utility man later elected free agency. An injury-replacement All-Star with Toronto in 2022, Espinal can put the ball in play, but with very little authority on his batted balls. His defensive versatility should at least afford the 31-year-old the opportunity to compete for a roster spot somewhere this spring. Read Past Outlooks
Back with Dodgers
The Dodgers signed Espinal to a contract Friday, Maddie Lee of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis
Espinal was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday after clearing waivers, but he's back with the big club largely due to Enrique Hernandez going on the injured list due to a significant left oblique injury. With Hernandez sidelined and Hyeseong Kim optioned to Triple-A, Espinal could see some work at second and third base in a depth role behind Max Muncy and Alex Freeland.

Espinal was traded from Toronto to Cincinnati shortly before the start of the 2024 season and went on to set career highs in home runs (9) and stolen bases (11). He made appearances at five different positions and enters 2025 with eligibility at second base and third. He's known as a slap hitter, but a .290/.344/.491 line against left-handed pitching last season shows he can do some damage when he has the platoon edge. Back with the Reds entering his age-30 campaign, Espinal is a utility man through and through. Those in NL-only leagues can consider him on draft day while mixed leaguers will want to try to aim higher.

Could end up on IL
Espinal is being evaluated and could be placed on the injured list, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.
Analysis
Espinal exited Saturday's loss to the Orioles in the eighth inning after injuring his hamstring, and he could be set for an extended absence. Otto Lopez was added to the taxi squad Sunday, and he would likely replace Espinal on the active roster if Espinal ends up on the IL.
