2026 Fantasy Outlook
Hoerner hasn't embraced a slugging mentality like many MLB players have in recent years, but he still has a place in fantasy lineups. That's largely due to his speed, as Hoerner swiped 29 bases in 2025, and he now has 103 steals over the past three years. The infielder has also been a consistently good contact hitter. He batted .297 last year and is a career .282 hitter. The Cubs don't always put Hoerner atop the order, opting instead to roll with Michael Busch regularly in 2025, at least against righties. However, Hoerner profiles as a traditional leadoff option, and his ability to get on base, tally steals and score plenty of runs makes him an intriguing player from any spot in a strong Chicago lineup. Drafting Hoerner means looking for power elsewhere, but the 28-year-old has plenty of fantasy appeal heading into 2026, and his outlook would get a boost if he manages to bat first most days. Making return to lineup
Hoerner (neck) will start at second base and bat leadoff in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.
Analysis
Hoerner was removed from Friday's game after experiencing tightness on the left side of his neck and then remained on the bench Saturday as well, but he feels well enough to give it a go in the series finale. The 28-year-old opened the season as the Cubs' No. 5 hitter but has climbed into the leadoff spot after producing a .374 OBP through his first 32 games.

Hoerner is one of the most consistent players in the league, with his wRC+ ranging between 103 and 108 over the last four seasons. He's better for fantasy teams since steals aren't captured by wRC+ and Hoerner has averaged 31 steals over the last three seasons. Hoerner's game is putting the ball in play 90 percent of the time, mostly line drives and grounders. His career hard hit rate is 31.6 percent, with last season's 27.7 percent being a career worst, but he fanned at his lowest rate ever. This is a risky profile, dependent on batted ball fortune. Hoerner had surgery on his right flexor tendon in October, and his availability for the start of the season is in question since he had not resumed hitting or throwing as of mid-January. His availability early in spring training should provide a better idea of his chances for Opening Day. Players with batting average and steals as chief assets grade well with a formulaic ranking method but are often faded by those using a more subjective approach. He can be a fantasy asset, but it takes the right team build.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Extension figures revealed
Hoerner's contract extension with the Cubs is a six-year deal worth $141 million, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com.
Analysis
Hoerner's new deal is worth more than the ones Trevor Story and Javier Baez signed with the Red Sox and Tigers, respectively, but lower than the contracts signed by Marcus Semien and Willy Adames. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, there is deferred money in the deal as well. If the six-year contract starts in 2027, that means the Cubs would have locked up Hoerner, Dansby Swanson, Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong for years to come.
