Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Butler was incredibly productive during his first full season in 2024 with 22 homers, 18 steals and an .807 OPS in 125 contests, but he endured the dreaded sophomore slump last year with a .234/.306/.404 slash line. He still delivered solid stats with 21 home runs and 22 steals while playing in 152 games, but he battled knee issues throughout the season, which may have affected his performance, and saw his strikeout rate spike to 28.4 percent. The 25-year-old underwent surgery early in the offseason and is expected to be healthy for spring training, which should give him a strong chance of bouncing back in 2026. Assuming he's fully past the knee problems, Butler could be a 30-30 candidate in 2026. Even if he doesn't reach that level, his 2025 production provides a decent floor given his power and speed output. Read Past Outlooks
Sitting again Sunday
Butler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.
Analysis
The 25-year-old went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Opening Day and now finds himself on the bench for a second consecutive contest. Butler sat against Toronto righty Dylan Cease on Saturday and also won't start versus lefty Eric Lauer on Sunday. Brent Rooker is instead starting in right field in order to allow catcher Shea Langeliers to receive some rest as the designated hitter.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
The Athletics' final season in Oakland was largely forgettable from an on-field standpoint, but Butler's emergence was a nice surprise. A three-homer game on the final day before the All-Star break sparked an incredible run in which the outfielder slashed .316/.361/.611 over a 60-game span, which included a second three-homer game Aug. 26. He launched 16 home runs during that stretch after totaling six long balls in his first 63 games of the season. While he's not a burner in terms of sprint speed, ranking only in the 58th percentile, he went a perfect 18-for-18 on steal attempts, which shows good instincts and the ability to read opposing pitchers. His strikeout rate was manageable at 23.9 percent and Butler, a lefty slugger, hit lefty pitching even better than he did righties. The walk rate could use some work, but the 24-year-old showed enough to safely project as the starting right fielder as the A's begin a new chapter in West Sacramento.
