2026 Fantasy Outlook
If the Rays could somehow combine the overall skill sets of Mangum and Chandler Simpson into one player, they could have something special. Neither has any power, but what Simpson lacks in plate discipline and overall approach, Mangum has in spades. Mangum endeared himself to the team with a high-contact and all-fields approach to hitting, as he realized his best chance for success was hitting the ball on the ground and using his speed to get on base. Mangum, despite having fewer than 400 plate appearances in 2025, tied with Trea Turner for the most infield hits in baseball with 32. Mangum needs that volume of infield hits because the overall quality of his contact is not great. In an ideal world, Mangum is a fourth outfielder on a club because he has the versatility and skills managers love to have on the bench, but he was forced into regular duties due to injuries and ineffectiveness of others on the roster. Mangum needs a lot to go well to repeat his two-category success of 2025, but this is truly an AL-only play for 2026. Read Past Outlooks
Back on bench Monday
Mangum is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres.
Analysis
The switch-hitting Mangum has cracked the starting nine in five of the Pirates' first 10 games, with three of those starts coming against left-handed pitching. Mangum should remain a regular presence in the lineup versus southpaws moving forward, but his opportunities to play against righties will likely be more sporadic while all of Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz, Ryan O'Hearn and Marcell Ozuna are available to cover the outfield and designated-hitter spots.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mangum has been toiling in the minor leagues since 2019, but he's yet to experience The Show. He's spent the last three seasons at Triple-A, playing for three different organizations. After Mangum produced a .317/.357/.442 line with 20 steals for Triple-A Durham in 2024, the club gave him a spot on their 40-man roster, shielding him from the Rule 5 Draft. Mangum can play all three outfield positions, which could help him make his debut this season as a 29-year-old. His asset is putting the bat on the ball, but since he's been older than most at his level for several seasons, it's unclear how well his contact skills may translate. The fact that Tampa Bay thinks enough of Mangum to dedicate a 40-man roster spot to him is sufficient enough to put him on the radar, but not enough to draft him, save for AL-only leagues.
