2026 Fantasy Outlook
Mister Upside is coming out of his cage and he has been doing just fine, and now fantasy managers want it all from Arias. His upside at the plate is high because he has elite bat speed, but the infrequency of his contact with the baseball limits him from realizing his offensive potential. Arias has struck out in 33 percent of his 1,034 major league plate appearances over the past four seasons, and that rate has worsened every season. His defense has kept him in the lineup as much as possible, because his range and throwing ability from the left side of the diamond is fantastic. If this sounds like another version of Christopher Morel, it gets better. Arias, like Morel, is out of minor league options, so the Guardians must keep him around or they can trade him to another club and see whether Arias can put it all together. The only players with worse AB/SO rates than Arias' in recent years with similar plate appearance totals include Bobby Dalbec, Michael Toglia, Will Benson and Trayce Thompson. None of them have yet to make it to 50 career homers while they all have batting averages below .225. The risk outweighs the reward here. Read Past Outlooks
Transferred to 60-day IL
The Guardians transferred Arias (hamstring) to the 60-day injured list Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Stuart Fairchild, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move. Arias has been sidelined since April 6 due to a hamstring strain that he aggravated last week, but he has been able to resume baseball activities and could still rejoin the Guardians some time in June.

Arias received extended run at the MLB level in 2023, when he appeared in 122 games for the Guardians, but he spent last season bouncing between the majors and Triple-A. The utility man played in 53 games for Cleveland and another 43 games for Triple-A Columbus. While Arias sported a robust .905 OPS for the Clippers, he had just a .608 OPS for the Guardians. He didn't hit a ton in the majors in 2023, either, when he batted .210 with a .627 OPS. Arias has struggled with strikeouts the last two seasons at the highest level, with a strikeout rate of nearly 33 percent each year. That has capped his offensive production and allowed other players, such as Daniel Schneemann, Angel Martinez and Brayan Rocchio, to see more playing time. Arias is a versatile defender, but until he shows more consistency at the plate, he's not really a reliable option for fantasy managers.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Leg up for shortstop job
Arias [wrist] will have a "leg up" over Brayan Rocchio and Tyler Freeman for the Guardians' shortstop job heading into 2024, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Arias suffered a right wrist fracture late in the season but should make a full recovery well ahead of spring training. He was being used as the club's regular shortstop down the stretch before getting hurt, finishing the year with a .628 OPS and 10 home runs over 122 games. Rocchio will probably be Arias' biggest challenger for the gig and is considered to have more upside. Whoever wins the job out of spring training wouldn't figure to have much of a leash.
