2026 Fantasy Outlook
There were many laggards in the Texas offense in 2025, including Duran, who was a shell of what he was just two seasons ago when the team won the World Series. Duran played himself into a reserve infielder role whose sole usable skill was his speed on the bases. The problem was Duran reached base 58 times all season so that speed was rarely on display. He hit zero homers as the league was more than comfortable challenging him with fastballs and sliders while using his impatience against him. Duran hit .304 gearing up for fastballs but his below .160 off everything else and the league fed him non-fastballs nearly 50% of the time. In this current shape and form, Duran lacks any fantasy value outside of the deepest AL-Only league who wants a flexible player on the bench that can steal a few bases. He is unusually dual eligible at first base and shorstop on draft day, but there is no reason to exercise draft capital here. Read Past Outlooks

Duran started at third base and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Tigers.
Analysis
Duran trimmed Detroit's lead in the eighth inning by taking Drew Anderson deep for his seventh home run of the season. He started at the hot corner in place of Josh Jung (knee) after filling in for shortstop Corey Seager (back) on Saturday. Prior to that, Duran had a stretch of games in right field while filling in for the then-injured Brandon Nimmo. The versatile infielder has swung the bat well recently, batting .353 with an .802 OPS over his last nine games. Through 301 plate appearances this season, Duran is slashing .273/.323/.418 with seven home runs, 15 doubles, two triples, 44 RBI, 35 runs scored and six stolen bases.

Stat Review
How does Ezequiel Duran compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
2020
Be it by design or happenstance, Duran fanned at a career-low clip in 2024, but it came at the expense of exit velocity and the resulting drops in hard-hit rate and barrel rate. The declines cost Duran playing time as he was often eschewed, even with three-quarters of the Rangers infield missing chunks of action. After posting a .619 OPS, Duran was demoted to Triple-A Round Rock in late June, where he stayed for a month. Things got worse after he returned with Duran recording a .591 OPS the rest of the way. Duran appeared everywhere but catcher, so his versatility is ideal for a Swiss army knife role. Dual eligibility (with the chance of more) is a plus, but unless Duran gets back to driving the ball, he's relegated to AL-only duty.
Duran emerged as a force for the Rangers and for fantasy managers in the first three months last season, slashing a robust .320/.361/.557 with 12 home runs over 233 plate appearances. The 24-year-old's over-aggressiveness eventually caught up to him, though, as he bottomed out from July on with a .225/.283/.310 line and just two homers in 59 contests. Duran's last start of the regular season came on Sept. 15 and he didn't play in the playoffs during the Rangers' run to the World Series. The poor finish puts Duran's future playing time in a precarious spot, although working in his favor is his ability to play all over the field. Duran has some loud tools, as his 96th percentile max exit velocity and 91st percentile sprint speed can attest. He's been a free swinger since his minor-league days, though, so it's fair to question whether he'll ever make enough contact for those tools to shine through.
Duran is an exciting potential of ingredients who frankly needs more time to bake in the minors. He has the raw tools to be a successful fantasy contributor at some point in his professional career, but 2023 is unlikely to be that time as his impatience at the plate and issues making contact have gotten the better of him at the upper levels of the sport. He would seemingly enter the spring in competition with Josh Jung for the third base job, and could very well earn it if the near year-long layoff for Jung comes into play during March. Duran will likely make the roster in a reserve capacity but the club may also decide regular at bats in Triple-A is better for him. Given the experienced and expensive depth on the roster, a solid spring from Jung almost guarantees a red tag hanging from Duran's locker after a late March game.
An outstanding small-sample Dominican Summer League performance in 2017 and reports of explosive athleticism have had Duran on the dynasty-league radar for a couple years, but it wasn't until his 2019 season in the New York-Penn League that the substance started to match the hype. He cut his groundball rate to a career-best 42.2% en route to leading the league with 13 homers -- his 143 wRC+ ranked fifth among hitters 20 and under. While he stole 11 bases on 15 tries, his athleticism has declined since he signed in 2017, and he now projects as a strong second baseman with big thump in his bat. The key for Duran in the coming years will be improving his approach. A 27.8 K% for a 20-year-old in short-season ball does not portend an impressive BA or OBP at Low-A, so it should not be a huge surprise if he struggles early in 2020.

Offseason trade possible
1BTexas Rangers
October 24, 2024
Duran is a candidate to be traded by the Rangers during the offseason, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
Analysis
The utility man underwhelmed at the plate this year with a .609 OPS in 92 contests, and Texas already has a superior utility option in Josh Smith when the rest of its infield is healthy. Duran likely won't significantly move the needle on the trade market by himself, but he could be included as part of a multi-player package.
