Drew Gilbert

Drew Gilbert

25-Year-Old OutfielderOF
San Francisco Giants
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Gilbert was part of the return the Giants received from the Mets for Tyler Rogers. Gilbert's minor league vitae is filled with seasons of double-digit walk rates and low strikeout totals, yet he has a career .262 average as a minor league hitter overall and a .238 average in 627 plate appearances in Triple-A between the two organizations. Gilbert received 39 games of playing time with the Giants after the trade and did not show much to change his projected career path of a fourth outfielder type. Gilbert should have some opportunities to force his way into more playing time if his bat can do more, but his numbers above Double-A ball have not been terribly impressive overall to lead us to believe there is more in the tank for this 25-year old outfielder. Analysis
While the Giants could hold him out of the lineup against some left-handed pitchers, Gilbert appears to have taken control of a regular starting role in the outfield against right-handed pitchers while San Francisco is without Harrison Bader (hamstring). Since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday in the wake of Bader's placement on the injured list, Gilbert has now been included in the lineup in five straight games. Over his first four starts, Gilbert went 3-for-12 with a home run, two walks, two RBI and an additional run.

Stat Review
How does Drew Gilbert compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.

2023
Gilbert makes for a tricky evaluation heading into 2025, as he hasn't performed at the level of a top prospect since his Double-A run in 2023 after getting traded to the Mets at the deadline, but injuries have played a role. An early-April hamstring strain sidelined Gilbert until mid-July last season, and he slashed .215/.313/.393 with 10 home runs and three steals in 56 games at Triple-A to close the year. Nine of his 10 homers came in his final 30 games, which is a promising sign, but it was a small sample against watered down pitching late in the year. Seen as a potential five-category outfielder when he was drafted in the first round by the Astros in 2022, Gilbert no longer shows off plus speed on the bases, having stolen 11 bases in 151 career games at Double-A and Triple-A. His .234 BABIP at Triple-A tanked his overall slash line, and his 20.6 percent strikeout rate and 10.1 percent walk rate were strong marks for a player making their Triple-A debut. An important factor working in Gilbert's favor is that he's an above-average defender in center field and right field and he's in an organization that strongly values defense, so he could still be a regular or strong-side platoon option even if he's only hitting in the bottom third of the lineup. Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo are locked into everyday roles, but there should be a chance for Gilbert in the majors sometime this summer if he earns it.
The Astros' first-round pick in 2022 and the headliner to New York in the deal that sent Justin Verlander back to Houston, Gilbert had peaks and valleys last season, but he finished well and appears to be almost big-league ready. The strong, athletic 5-foot-9 center fielder can handle all three outfield spots and could turn into a five-tool player. From June 25 on, Gilbert slashed .311/.386/.545 with 11 home runs and five steals in 59 games at Double-A. He had an 18.9 percent strikeout rate over that stretch, so the 23-year-old lefty hitter may be poised to keep mashing upper-minors pitching until the Mets start his clock. No longer a plus runner, Gilbert has good instincts on the bases, but he may be capped at around 15 steals in the majors. Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marie are locked in as everyday players when healthy, but Gilbert could grab the other spot sometime in the first half if he performs as expected. Long term, he could be a leadoff or No. 2 hitter, but he would probably be a bottom-third hitter initially.
The best hitter on the best regular-season team in college baseball last season, Gilbert led Tennessee with a .362/.455/.673 slash line, 11 home runs and a 32:33 K:BB in 58 games as a junior. The Astros snagged him with No. 28 overall pick, but a dislocated right elbow limited him to nine games in his pro debut. At 5-foot-9, he is a little shorter than most first-round hitters, but Gilbert is quite strong and plays with physicality on both sides of the ball. The lefty-hitting center fielder has premium bat speed that should translate to at least average game power. He is at least an above-average runner, although he attempted only 19 steals (16 successes) in his three years in college. Gilbert also boasts a plus arm in center field. He hit .313 with two home runs, six steals and a 2:4 K:BB in 39 plate appearances across complex ball and Single-A, but the real test will come at Double-A. He was a little too fiery at times in college and needs to avoid being a hot head, but Gilbert has a potential five-category toolset and is an appealing target in first-year player drafts.

Candidate to be traded
OFNew York Mets
June 24, 2025
Gilbert is mentioned as part of the return the Rockies might receive in a hypothetical deal with the Mets, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
Analysis
The Rockies are expected to be active near the trade deadline, and if they do business with the Mets, they could ask for Gilbert in return. The 24-year-old is playing at Triple-A this season and owns a .356 on-base percentage in his minor-league career. He has a lot of versatility on defense as well since he can play all three outfield positions.
