2026 Fantasy Outlook
Smith had a rapid ascent to the majors after being selected 14th overall in the 2024 Draft, but his inclusion on the Astros' 2025 Opening Day roster was still shocking. He had only 20 plate appearances at Double-A at the time, and only 134 total appearances as a pro. That's important context to keep in mind when assessing his 2025 season, which was unimpressive when looking at his 90 wRC+, .298 wOBA and .671 OPS. Some of the shortcomings he displayed as a draft prospect and a prospect in the pros came through in his first big-league sample, most notably a lack of power caused by a subpar 6.9 percent barrel rate and 45.1 percent groundball rate. His ability to make consistent contact also unsurprisingly suffered - Smith's strikeout rate rose to 27.8 percent, 10 percentage points higher than his minor-league sample - leaving little for Smith to fall back on for counting stat production. While his future is still very likely bright, the context for Smith heading into 2026 is not particularly positive. He was limited to a small-side platoon for the final month of the season, and general manager Dana Brown stated that Smith could begin the 2026 season with Triple-A Sugar Land. This looks to be a buy-low moment in dynasty leagues, but Smith is a very risky selection in early redraft leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Stat Review
How does Cam Smith compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Smith, the No. 14 overall pick last year, may have had the best statistical debut of any hitter in the class. He slashed .313/.396/.609 with seven home runs and a 24:15 K:BB in 32 games across Single-A, High-A and Double-A and has been improving rapidly as a hitter over the past couple years. He was among the top gainers in the country in both contact rate (70.6 percent to 82.1 percent) and 90th percentile exit velocity (106.5 mph to 111.3 mph) from 2023 to 2024 en route to rising up boards as a draft-eligible sophomore at Florida State. A 6-foot-3, 225-pound brick house with big-league strength, Smith also excelled over a large sample with a wood bat in the Cape Cod League (.981 OPS, 12.8 K%), which is an important datapoint. There were questions about his swing plane coming out of school and how much over-the-fence power he'd get to, so it's worth noting that six of his seven homers came at Single-A, where he had a 28.6 percent groundball rate, before Smith's groundball rate jumped to around 50 percent at High-A and Double-A. He'll likely return to Double-A with a potential bump to Triple-A around midseason. Smith has the upside of a .300 hitter with 25-30 homer pop. The Cubs sent him to the Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade in December, though that shouldn't significantly affect Smith's immediate outlook. It's worth noting however, that Houston fortified its corner infield this offseason by acquiring Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes, with the latter also being included in the Tucker trade.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Shortlisted for Gold Glove
OFHouston Astros
October 24, 2025
Smith is one of three right fielders nominated to win the 2025 Gold Glove Award in the American League, according to MLB.com.
Analysis
Smith showcased impressive arm strength in 2025, and he was one of the most surprising young players in the American League on defense. Despite being a third baseman in college and during his brief time in the minors for the Cubs, Smith moved to right field once he joined the Astros in the Kyle Tucker deal and responded by finishing with plus-12 DRS. He'll compete for the Gold Glove at the position with Wilyer Abreu and Adolis Garcia.
