Retires after knockout loss
WelterweightUFC
April 19, 2026
Burns lost to Mike Malott via TKO (punches) at 2:08 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night 273 on Saturday in Winnipeg.
ANALYSIS
Burns looked to push the pace, firing leg kicks and big overhands in the center of the cage. While he was able to score with shots, the Brazilian rarely hit Malott cleanly. Conversely, Burns's face was marked up by the middle of Round 2 due to constant jabs and counter punches. After the fight, an emotional Burns laid his gloves down in the cage, explaining that he was content with how his career unfolded. While he never quite reached a title, Burns was a mainstay at the top of the welterweight division for half a decade, challenging for the belt and striking fear in opponents with his power and world-class jiu-jitsu. He leaves the sport with a record of 22-10-0, having lost his last five fights.

Looks to bounce-back vs. Malott
WelterweightUFC
February 20, 2026
Burns will take on Mike Malott in a welterweight bout at UFC Winnipeg on April 18, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Burns is in desperate need of a victory, as he's dropped four straight bouts and six of his last eight. Most recently, he fell at the hands of Michael Morales via Strikes in the first round of a fight back in May of 2025. He'll look to turn his fortunes around against a fighter in Malott who is on a hot streak, having won his last three bouts.

Burns lost to Michael Morales via TKO (punches) at 3:39 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Burns was put in this position to serve as cannon fodder for one of the top prospects in the entire sport and he served his role to perfection. Entering as a +400 underdog, outside of one brief takedown which he was able to do nothing with, Gilbert was dominated from start to finish. Never a strong striker to begin with, Burns simply can't take a punch in the latter stages of his career. The lack of durability has left him unable to generate any offense of his own. The end result is a four-fight losing streak dating back to May 2023. The only positive you can say for Burns is that the four setbacks came against the current champion (Jack Della Maddalena), a former champion (Belal Muhammad), and two guys that are going to be fighting for a title sooner than later (Sean Brady, Morales). Set to turn 39 years of age in July, the UFC is going to have to be exceedingly careful who they match Burns up against moving forward if they plan on running him back out there.

ANALYSIS
This is the third date for this fight. It was originally scheduled for UFC 314 in April, and then it was bumped to UFC 315 in Montreal on May 10. Now it's been moved to a main event at UFC Apex. Similar to what happened with the previous change of dates, no official reason was provided for the fight being moved.
Fight bumped to UFC 315

February 20, 2025
Burns' scheduled welterweight matchup against Michael Morales has been moved to UFC 315 on May 10 in Montreal, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Originally scheduled for UFC 314 in April, no official reason was provided for the fight being moved. Burns is now seemingly relegated to gatekeeper status following three consecutive losses, and the former title contender finds himself a pretty hefty betting underdog against a contender in Morales who is undefeated as a pro and sporting five consecutive wins in the UFC.
Morales up next
WelterweightUFC
January 18, 2025
Burns will fight Michael Morales at UFC 314 on April 12, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
After losing to Sean Brady in September, Burns' losing streak now sits at three fights. The 38-year-old will surely be desperate to turn things around in April, though doing so against Morales may be easier said than done, as his opponent will enter the bout with a perfect 17-0 professional record.
