Underdog heading into UFC 329
LightweightUFC
July 10, 2026
McGregor is approximately a (+180) betting underdog heading into his UFC 329 Main Event welterweight matchup against Max Holloway on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
After opening closer to the (+230) mark, the public money is starting to come in on the UFC superstar and fan favorite. Set to enter the Octagon on the verge of turning 38 years old Saturday night, McGregor hasn't competed since July of 2021 and hasn't recorded a victory since January of 2020. Holloway, meanwhile, has been actively fighting some of the best the UFC has to offer, racking up a 5-3 record since the last time McGregor set foot in the cage. The one advantage McGregor might have is size, as this bout is taking place at 170 pounds. Holloway has competed at featherweight and lightweight for most of his career, and while he stands two inches taller than McGregor, it will be the Irishman who enters with a five-inch reach advantage. Look for McGregor to use this theoretical power advantage and attempt to land a big shot early, but the longer this fight goes, the better chance Holloway has of outlasting him with his trademark cardio and volume.

UFC return confirmed
LightweightUFC
May 16, 2026
McGregor will face Max Holloway in a lightweight bout in the main event of UFC 329 in Las Vegas on July 11.
ANALYSIS
McGregor will return to the Octagon in what will be his first fight in nearly five years, and he'll do it in a rematch against one of his biggest rivals in Holloway. Given Holloway is coming off a loss, no belt will be on the line, but it remains the biggest fight the UFC can put on in 2026. McGregor is coming off an 18-month suspension, and while he's had a storied history and is arguably the company's most marketable asset, it remains to be seen how his technique and stamina levels will be after a five-year absence from the cage. Holloway has fought one or more times in each year of McGregor's absence, and he'll bring plenty of cardio and volume to the table in what should be a striking-heavy affair for as along as it lasts.
Expected to return this summer
LightweightUFC
May 7, 2026
McGregor is expected to step back into the octagon this summer according to Dana White, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
McGregor last fought in the UFC in July of 2021, a loss to Dustin Porier where he suffered a serious leg injury. He has also recently just cleared an 18-month suspension for the UFC's Anti-Doping policy. While no opponent or specific event has been announced, McGregor's potential return is sure to catch the eyes of fans across the world.
Suspended 18 months
LightweightUFC
October 7, 2025
McGregor has been suspended 18 months for violating the UFC's Anti-Doping policy, per MMAFighting.com.
ANALYSIS
McGregor reportedly had several, repeated whereabouts failures in 2024 that led to his suspension, meaning he didn't alert the UFC to his location in order to be made available for a random drug test. McGregor won't be eligible to compete again until March 20, 2026, an important date because he would still be available to compete in the UFC's White House Card speculated for June 14th, 2026.
Targeting return for August
LightweightUFC
June 22, 2024
McGregor (toe) revealed he's targeting a return to the octagon in August or September, according to Andy Stevenson of SevereMMA.com. "August or September, you know the way it is. [...] I'm three weeks into the recovery and I still can't get into a shoe yet."
ANALYSIS
McGregor was scheduled to fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29, but he withdrew from the fight due to this injury, and the star lightweight revealed when he plans to be back in the octagon. His recovery will ultimately dictate when he'll be able to fight again, but it seems McGregor might be able to step into an octagon before the end of this year.
Reveals toe injury

McGregor withdrew from UFC 303 because of a toe injury, according to MMA reporter Ariel Helwani.
ANALYSIS
McGregor recently posted on Instagram the reason why he withdrew from UFC 303, citing a broken toe on the same left foot that he injured back at UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. He reportedly only "needs a few weeks" to recover, suggesting a potential fight from him down the line is still on the table. The question is when, and if said bout will be scheduled against Michael Chandler again or someone else.
