2024 Fantasy Outlook
Reliability has never exactly been a part of Zub's game, as he once again failed to reach the 70-game mark for the third time in his four-year NHL career. Still, in his 69 outings last year, the puck-moving blueliner set a new personal best with his 20 assists and 25 points while averaging 21:01 of ice time. Without a role on the power play, the 28-year-old Russian's offensive productivity figures to remain limited with his ceiling likely in the 30-35 point range - assuming he could actually play a full 82-game season. Zub does offer added fantasy value in formats that utilize defensive stats, as he should continue to rack up plenty of hits and blocked shots after posting 139 and 122, respectively, last year. Zub (concussion) practiced Monday and could return to the lineup sooner rather than later, per Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia.
ANALYSIS
Zub has missed the last eight games and might be ready to play as early as Tuesday versus Buffalo, according to Garrioch. The 29-year-old defender hasn't earned a point in three appearances this season, but he has provided four shots on goal, one blocked shot and three hits. Once he's healthy, Zub will probably replace Jacob Bernard-Docker in the lineup.

Zub had three separate instances last season in which he missed at least eight straight games, although he remained healthy from mid-February to the end of the year. Zub is a physical, stay-at-home rearguard that offers next to nothing in terms of offensive production. He has a dozen goals and 46 points in 181 NHL games and is yet to record a point with the man advantage. He has posted 286 hits over the course of the past two seasons, but even those numbers aren't high enough to make him worthy of a pick in fantasy pools which value such a number.
Zub played a bigger role for the Senators a season ago than most would have initially expected. He averaged more than 21 minutes per game (21:02) while posting career-best marks in goals (6), assists (16), points (22), shots on goal (92), hits (155) and blocks (124). Zub's fantasy value will be forever limited by the fact he doesn't receive any power-play time, but the Russian rearguard makes for a cheap source of hits and blocks late in your draft if you are struggling in those categories.
Zub played well above expectations in his first NHL season in 2020-21. The Russian secured a full-time roster spot with Ottawa in mid-February and played in every game the rest of the way. All told, Zub posted 14 points, 89 hits, 70 blocks and a plus-four rating through 47 contests. The Senators were impressed to the point they felt comfortable handing Zub a new two-year, $5 million contract extension in May. It's a deal that seemingly locks Zub into a top-four role for the Sens for the next two seasons, but his fantasy value will be minimal during that period due to a lack of power-play time. Zub saw just 0:04 of ice time per game with the man advantage a year ago.
Zub joins the Senators in 2020-21 after a relatively solid year with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL, where he had 22 points in 57 outings. In training camp, Zub is likely to compete with Josh Brown for playing time. An undrafted blueliner, Zub is a relatively unknown asset in North America. There's reason to believe he could earn a substantial role this year, but fantasy managers would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with the 25-year-old instead of using a draft pick to select him in the late rounds.

Zub, who has been out with a lower-body injury, appears good to go ahead of Saturday's matchup with Chicago, per TSN 1200 Ottawa.
ANALYSIS
Zub could return from a two-game stint on the sidelines due to his lower-body issue. Prior to getting hurt, the blueliner was mired in a 15-game goal drought during which he generated seven helpers and 17 shots. With just five more points, the Russian will top his career-best 22 points set back in 2021-22.
