Simpson officially declared for the 2026 NFL Draft on Tuesday, Colin Gay of The Tuscaloosa News reports.
ANALYSIS
After serving as a depth quarterback for Alabama during his first three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Simpson stepped into a full-time starting role as a redshirt junior in 2025. He established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC, finishing the season with a 64.5 percent completion rate while throwing for 3,567 yards and a 28:5 TD:INT. Indiana's Fernando Mendoza profiles as the clear top quarterback in the draft class, but Simpson could emerge as the No. 2 option in the position group and may have a shot at coming off the board in the middle to back end of the first round.

Eric Edholm of NFL.com mocks Simpson to the Rams with the 29th pick of the 2026 NFL Draft.
ANALYSIS
Fernando Mendoza is widely projected as the consensus first-overall selection in initial mock drafts. However, Simpson represents a potential late first-round target for franchises with a pressing need at the quarterback position, akin to the Giants' selection of Jaxson Dart with the 25th pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. Simpson contended with various injuries during the latter half of the 2025 college campaign, culminating in his removal from Alabama's College Football Playoff defeat against Indiana due to a fractured rib. Given that Matthew Stafford -- fresh off an MVP season -- will reach 37 years of age in February, the Rams may consider securing Simpson's rights as an investment in the future, allowing him to develop under the tutelage of the veteran signal-caller.
