2025 Fantasy Outlook
Freiermuth is coming off an efficient 2024 season in which he caught 83.3 percent of his 78 targets to set a career high with 65 catches. His seven TDs matched a career best from his 2021 rookie season while tying for fourth in the league among tight ends, and 653 receiving yards marked the second-highest total of his career behind the 2022 campaign. Freiermuth has dealt with a QB carousel throughout his pro career, but he's been a red-zone threat for every Pittsburgh signal-caller other than Kenny Pickett, scoring 16 TDs in his 37 regular-season games started by any other QB. The carousel spun again this offseason, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields both leaving Pittsburgh and Aaron Rodgers signing in June. Another big change was at wide receiver, with the Steelers trading for DK Metcalf in March only to trade George Pickens in May. But the biggest change came in June when the Steelers traded for TE Jonnu Smith. The Steelers likely will employ a lot of two-TE sets, but Freiermuth's snap, route and target projections will take a hit in an offense that's unlikely to be pass-heavy under veteran coordinator Arthur Smith. Freiermuth secured 41 of 54 targets for 486 yards and four touchdowns across 17 regular-season appearances in 2025.
ANALYSIS
Freiermuth paced Pittsburgh's tight ends in receiving production, but his ceiling was significantly capped by the presence of both Jonnu Smith and Darnell Washington (forearm), as well as the run-first schematic design of former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith (now at Ohio State). The 27-year-old remains under contract through the 2028 season and will retain a consistent role in Pittsburgh's offense, but both Smith and Washington are set to return in 2026, and the first read for red-zone opportunities will consistently be wide receiver DK Metcalf. Those factors will make Freiermuth a deep sleeper in 2026 fantasy drafts, and it's difficult to envision an upside scenario for him even if new head coach Mike McCarthy manages to spark things on offense.

Freiermuth is coming off a down year, having recorded just 308 yards and two touchdowns over 12 games in his third NFL season after scoring seven times as a rookie and compiling 732 yards in his sophomore season. He had the first IR stint of his three-year career due to a hamstring injury and dropped to 32 catches after reaching 60 receptions in each of his first two campaigns. Part of the problem for Freiermuth was a lack of chemistry with quarterback Kenny Pickett, who threw just two TD passes to the 25-year-old tight end in 24 starts over the last two seasons. That issue has been alleviated, as Pittsburgh retooled its quarterback room by bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. The Steelers also traded away wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who finished second on the team with 87 targets last season. The 6-foot-5 Freiermuth remains atop Pittsburgh’s TE depth chart over 2023 third-round draft pick Darnell Washington, and improved quarterback play could help unearth the red-zone upside Freiermuth flashed as a rookie, but the Steelers offense figures to be run-first again under new coordinator Arthur Smith.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Team adds competition at TE
Freiermuth will have competition for targets from Jonnu Smith, whom Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports the Steelers acquired in a trade Monday from the Dolphins, along with Jalen Ramsey and a 2027 seventh-round pick in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
ANALYSIS
Smith has long been a favorite of Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, though the two aren't related. Smith's 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024 for Miami significantly outpaced Freiermuth's 65 catches for 653 yards and seven touchdowns with the Steelers in the 2024 regular season, so Freiermuth may have to settle for a backup role after the acquisition of Smith, with a near-even split of targets as a likely best-case scenario.
