2025 Fantasy Outlook
The Vikings still value Aaron Jones, but their trade for Mason -- who then signed a two-year, $10.5 million contract -- suggests the team wants to utilize power-running concepts that don't suit Jones. At 5-foot-11, 223 pounds, Mason is a classic hammer between the tackles, complementing the lighter and more fragile Jones, who nonetheless figures to remain Minnesota's primary runner between the 20s. The closer Minnesota gets to scoring range, the more Mason's appeal should become apparent. Mason went undrafted out of Georgia Tech back in 2022, but he might have made more of a name for himself if not for then-teammate Jahmyr Gibbs stealing the spotlight. Mason's NFL production only lends credence to the idea that he was a quality player all along, with 236 career carries yielding 1,253 yards (5.3 YPC) and seven touchdowns, including 685 rushing yards and three TDs in Weeks 1-8 of 2024 when he filled in for an injured Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco. On the other hand, Mason's meager career total of 14 receptions suggests he might have to split snaps with another running back even if Jones misses time. Read Past Outlooks

Set for Week 18 start
Mason is positioned to start Sunday's season finale against the Packers due to Aaron Jones (hip) being ruled out for Week 18, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason handled double-digit carries in all four of the games Jones previously missed to injury between Weeks 3 and 7, and he could face a favorable matchup Sunday versus a Green Bay squad that Mike Spofford of the team's official site reports will rest certain key starters, including on defense. Across 15 regular-season appearances so far, Mason has rushed 145 times for 664 yards (4.6 YPC) and three touchdowns. He's also secured 14 of 16 targets for 51 receiving yards. Ty Chandler and Zavier Scott will handle depth roles behind Mason on this weekend.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
No player better represents the idea that just about any running back can thrive in Kyle Shanahan's offense than Mason. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2022, Mason has averaged 5.6 yards per carry for the 49ers, and while he lacks breakaway speed, his power and sheer refusal to go down have resulted in some impressive yards after contact in a small sample. The 49ers backfield seemingly got more crowded this offseason when they drafted Isaac Guerendo in the fourth round, but it ended up working out well for Mason when Guerendo and Elijah Mitchell both missed most of training camp with injuries. Mitchell was then place on season-ending injured reserve in late August, leaving Mason as the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey to start the season.

Could lead backfield in Week 18
Mason practiced fully Thursday while Aaron Jones was a non-participant due to a hip injury, setting up Mason as Minnesota's potential lead back for Week 18 against the Packers.
ANALYSIS
Mason sat out the Week 17 win over the Lions due to an ankle injury, but his full participation Wednesday suggests he'll be available for the regular-season finale. Meanwhile, Jones has missed consecutive practices due to his hip injury and may not be an option Sunday. Mason has worked as the top alternative to Jones when both have been available, though the Vikings also have Ty Chandler and Zavier Scott as backfield options. In the four previous games that Jones has missed this season, Mason rushed for 282 yards and four touchdowns, averaging just over 70 yards and a touchdown per game.
