Jordan Akins

32-Year-Old Tight EndTE
Cleveland Browns
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Browns moved on from Harrison Bryant, creating an opportunity for Akins, who had his worst season statistically in 2023. Prospects for him to improve are limited. David Njoku, who broke out in 2023, is the clear No. 1 option at tight end, and the Browns are focused on creating a wideout corps that can make use of quarterback Deshaun Watson's downfield proclivities. Akins, who has history with Watson in Houston, entered the summer season as the No. 2 TE, but it feels like the Browns could add another veteran. They did that already by signing Giovanni Ricci (formerly Carolina), a blocking tight end who can line up at fullback if needed. Read Past Outlooks

Three catches in loss
TECleveland Browns
November 4, 2024
Akins caught three of four targets for 32 yards in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
After a one-target performance a week ago, Akins saw a modest increase in volume Sunday. He was on the field for 25 snaps, the most he's seen since David Njoku returned from injury, but there's no reason to believe the boost is sustainable. The loss dropped the Browns to 2-7 as they enter a bye week, and the club may start preparing for 2025 by dealing veterans ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. The 32-year-old Akins, in the final year of his contract, is likely not part of the organization's future.

Lost amid a hectic offseason of target upgrades was the Browns adding Akins, who previously worked with QB Deshaun Watson when the two were with Houston. Ironically, his best year was 2022 when Akins had Davis Mills throwing him passes. Akins wasn't with the Texans 'organization in the preseason but rejoined his former team on its practice squad and finished with a team-high five TDs. While relinking with Watson is a good thing, the situation is different. There weren't many threats in a discombobulated offense last year, but Akins joins an outfit teeming with quality receivers and will back up David Njoku.
Akins, who is entering his age 30 season, saw his production dip considerably in his fourth year with the Texans, with no TDs and just 214 yards in 13 games. After signing with the Giants due to the departure of Evan Engram, Akins was cut by the team in August.
The Texans let Darren Fells go during the offseason, removing one obstacle for Akins, who led the team's tight ends with 37 catches, 49 targets and 403 yards in 2020. Fells was a big red-zone target and caught four touchdowns, so his removal could lead to greater opportunities near the goal-line for Akins, who enters training camp as the Texans' top tight end. Houston was a vertical passing team in 2020, and tight ends weren't a major focus, but that's expected to change in 2021, with Deshaun Watson's status cloudy.
The Texans had a deep group at tight end in 2019, but injuries left Akins and Darren Fells as the primary options from Week 1 until the team's playoff loss to the Chiefs. Akins doubled his production in 2019, relative to his rookie 2018 season, in all major fantasy categories and caught the first two touchdowns of his career. He benefited from injuries at wideout which prompted an increase in two-tight-end sets. That might be different in 2020 after Houston added Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb to a wideout crew that also includes Will Fuller and Kenny Stills. Additionally, the Texans enter training camp with four healthy tight ends.
With fellow tight ends Jordan Thomas and Kahale Warring (concussion) on IR, Akins figures to see added opportunities in the Texans offense this season. The 2018 third-rounder hauled in 17 passes for 225 yards in 16 games as a rookie and seemed destined to work in a time-share with Thomas this year, but Akins now profiles as the Texans' top pass-catching tight end, while veteran teammates Darren Fells and Logan Paulsen are valued more for their blocking ability.
Multiple concussion injuries limited Houston tight ends to 52 catches and two touchdowns in 2017, one year after they had a collective performance of 115 receptions and seven touchdowns. C.J. Fiedorowicz suffered three concussions and was forced to retire, while Ryan Griffin had two bouts, but will return in 2018. Head coach Bill O'Brien wants to get this position group back to its 2016 levels, and that started with the addition of Akins, a 2018 third-round draft pick out of Central Florida. A former baseball player (centerfield) who played four years in the Texas Rangers' system, Akins entered college football as a wide receiver before a knee injury prompted a shift to tight end. He caught 32 passes for 515 yards and four touchdowns for the Knights last year. Houston coaches grew familiar with the UCF graduate when they coached him during the Senior Bowl All-Star Game and were happy to see him available in the third round. They also drafted Jordan Thomas in the sixth round. Of the two, Akins is considered the better receiver and will be the first in line to get the targets that used to go to Fiedorowicz.

Akins is the only healthy tight end on the Browns' roster heading into Sunday's game against the Jaguars, as David Njoku has been ruled out due to an ankle injury, per Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal.
ANALYSIS
Akins had three catches for 27 yards on four targets in the season opener, during which Njoku sustained the injury. Njoku is considered week-to-week and may miss additional game action beyone Week 2. The Browns will likely elevate at least one of Geoff Swaim, Cameron Latu or Blake Whiteheart from the practice squad to join Akins on the gameday roster.
