2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mixon won't trick anyone into thinking he's one of the best running backs, but his appeal to an NFL offense is obvious enough: he's adequate or better at all tasks, making it easy for an offensive coordinator to leave him on the field no matter the situation. Mixon's first season in Houston went well overall, and it might have been his best NFL campaign if not for injury. Two separate ankle issues cost Mixon reps - one in Week 2 (three games missed) and one in Week 15, the latter of which Mixon played through. Before that second injury, he'd topped 100 rushing yards in seven of 10 games, scoring 12 TDs and putting up high-end RB1 numbers for fantasy. Over the final four weeks of the regular season, he had 129 rushing yards total and nary a TD. The Texans brought him back for 2025 to be their lead runner again, but an offseason ankle injury ended up lingering all summer and kept Mixon on the non-football injury list, ruling him out for the first four games of the regular season. Nick Chubb looks like the favorite to start Week 1 for Houston, with Woody Marks, Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale also competing for roles. Read Past Outlooks

Recovering from offseason surgery
Texans general manager Nick Caserio said Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine that Mixon (foot/ankle) had surgery this offseason, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon missed the entire 2025 season due to a foot/ankle injury that Caserio said in January was a "freak thing" and "as unique a situation" as he has dealt with, and though he has one year left on his contract, his status with the team for 2026 remains uncertain. Caserio also said in January that the Texans' medical staff will need to evaluate Mixon before determining whether the veteran running back will be able to play next season. The news of Mixon undergoing a new offseason procedure seemingly adds a further wrinkle to that evaluation, though Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports that the team would like to have Mixon back. Across 14 regular-season appearances with Houston in 2024, Mixon rushed 245 times for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding a 36-309-1 line through the air.

When word broke that the Bengals were done with Mixon it seemed his days of fantasy relevance might have been done too, but then the Texans swooped in to make him the starting running back for one of the best offenses in the conference. Mixon's high-usage role made him a valuable fantasy asset with the Bengals, and he might now have a similarly cushy gig as a potential three-down player in C.J. Stroud's offense. Although he averaged 4.1 YPC or less each of the past five seasons, Mixon scored 49 TDs in 69 games and averaged 3.0 receptions per contest. His career 81.6 percent catch rate and average of 6.2 yards per target represent excellent pass-catching efficiency by RB standards and make him a strong bet to see most of the Texans' RB targets. Houston still has Dameon Pierce, who showed so much promise as a rookie in 2022 but was then horrendous in 2023, leaving it uncertain whether Mixon has serious competition for carries. The three-year, $27 million extension Houston gave Mixon after trading a seventh-round pick for him suggests the 28-year-old should be a heavily used starter even if Pierce steals some carries each week.

Cut candidate for Houston
Mixon is a top cut candidate for the Texans this offseason, Mike Jones of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mixon signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract with the Texans in March of 2024 after spending the first seven years of his NFL career with the Bengals. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2024 but was sidelined for the entire 2025 season due to foot and ankle injuries that he sustained during the offseason, which led to rookie third-rounder Woody Marks taking over as the Texans' RB1. There is uncertainty over whether Mixon will be able to return for the 2026 campaign, and given that his salary has an approximately $8.5 million cap hit, the Texans could move on from the veteran running back in a cost-saving measure.
