2024 Fantasy Outlook
A fourth-round pick in 2023, Haener was suspended the first six games last season and still is awaiting his NFL debut. That could come this season. With Jameis Winston off to Cleveland, Haener is the favorite to back up fellow Fresno State alum Derek Carr in New Orleans. He’ll compete with journeyman Nathan Peterman and rookie fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler. Undersized at 6-1, 200, Haener doesn’t possess elite traits and has only adequate arm strength, but he gets the ball out quickly, showed good anticipation in college and is plenty athletic. Taysom Hill is still around as the gadget guy, but if Carr misses time, Haener likely will take the reins. Read Past Outlooks

Benched early in loss Sunday
Haener completed four of 10 passes for 49 yards and one interception during Sunday's 20-19 loss against Washington. He also rushed once for seven yards.
ANALYSIS
Haener was making his first career start in place of injured signal-caller Derek Carr, who suffered a concussion and hand fracture during last week's win over the Giants. However, the second-year quarterback struggled against the Commanders' middling defense and tossed an interception during the first half. This led New Orleans to bench Haener for rookie Spencer Rattler coming out of halftime. The Saints went on four scoring drives in the second half and came up just short on a last-second two-point conversion attempt that would have won the game. Rattler went 10-for-21 for 135 yards and a touchdown during the second half. Given each quarterback's performance Sunday, it's likely that Rattler get the start ahead of Haener for next week's contest against the Packers on Monday, Dec. 23.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Haener was the first quarterback selected on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft, as he was widely considered an instinctual, tough passer primarily limited by his stature (6-1, 200). He balanced production with efficiency at Fresno State, accumulating a 67:17 TD:INT, and he completed at least 65 percent of his passes in each of his three seasons as a starter. With Derek Carr now in town as QB1 and Taysom Hill available as a dual-threat option, Haener profiles as a developmental project who may compete with backup Jameis Winston after the latter agreed to a restructured contract in the offseason.

Haener was replaced by Spencer Rattler at halftime during Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Haener struggled mightily in his first NFL start, completing just four of 10 passing attempts for 49 yards and one interception as the Saints took a 14-0 deficit into the locker room. Rattler ignited the offense as the Saints came a failed two-point conversion away from pulling off the comeback. Derek Carr is likely to remain sidelined against the Packers in Week 16 as he recovers from a concussion and hand injury, but Rattler's likely to get the start over Haener after Haener's struggles against Washington.
