Contract talks stall
DTNew York Giants
April 15, 2026
Lawrence and the Giants have reportedly reached an impasse on talks regarding a new contract extension for the defensive tackle, per ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that Lawrence previously requested a trade and hasn't been present for the start of the team's initial offseason workout program. Meanwhile, as the NFL Draft approaches, the Giants are said to have engaged with other teams about a potential trade for the 2019 first rounder, who recorded 31 tackles in 17 regular-season games in 2025. That said, it's still possible the two sides could find enough common ground for Lawrence to stick around in 2026, on the heels of conversations with Lawrence's agent that GM Joe Schoen labeled "productive."

The Giants gave Lawrence a four-year, $90 million contract prior to last season and were rewarded with another All-Pro and Pro Bowl campaign from the 340-pound nose tackle. He doesn't quite rack up sacks - he had 4.5 last season and 7.5 the year prior - but he consistently uses his immense power and surprising agility to overwhelm the interior of opposing offensive lines. Lawrence has emerged as one of the truly elite defensive linemen in the game and should continue to cement that status for years to come.
Lawrence enjoyed his most productive NFL campaign in 2022, finishing with career-high marks of 68 tackles, 7.5 sacks, three pass defenses and two forced fumbles. The standout play helped him earn his first All-Pro and Pro-Bowl selections, and the Giants rewarded him with a four-year, $90 million contract during the offseason. Lawrence has been a beacon of good health, having played 16 games in each of his four NFL seasons to date, and he appears set to lead New York's defensive front for many years to come.
Lawrence has been a steady part of the Giants' defensive front since he was selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As such, it's of little surprise that New York chose to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract during the offseason. Lawrence racked up 54 tackles and 2.5 sacks last season, and he's an IDP option in leagues that require managers to roster a defensive tackle.
The 17th overall pick in the 2019 Draft, Lawrence is firmly established as a run stuffer (53 tackles last season) in the Giants' 3-4 alignment, but he contributed with four sacks and two batted passes. At 6-4, 342, he's a monstrous presence and an important piece of this defense.
The 17th overall pick in the 2019 draft, Lawrence was stout against the run last year and managed 2.5 sacks as a rookie. The Giants 3-4 alignment doesn't allow for a ton of stats from its ends - the edge-rushing linebackers generate most of the sacks - but Lawrence looks like a solid if unspectacular contributor after Year 1.
Taken with the 17th pick in the draft, the 6-5, 342-pound Lawrence is a monster interior lineman with excellent quickness for his size. There's some concern that his college production fell off after his freshman year, and he's unlikely to be especially valuable for IDP purposes as he'll be doing the dirty work inside while others rush the passer. He'll rotate at nose tackle with Dalvin Tomlinson on passing downs but could win the starting left defensive end job in the team's 3-4 scheme out of the gate.

Lawrence and the Giants were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension, and he's likely to be traded prior to the draft, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Lawrence requested a trade in early April, though the Giants had publicly expressed optimism that they'd be able to retain him with a new contract. The sides made some progress in negotiations, but those talks eventually stalled. New York is now reportedly engaging with other teams about a potential trade with the 2026 NFL Draft rapidly approaching.
