Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mattison did well as a backup in his first four NFL seasons and seemed well-situated going into 2023 without Dalvin Cook ahead of him on the depth chart. Instead, Mattison's one-year stint as a starter for the Vikings went about as poorly as possible. Fumbles, dropped passes and short-yardage suddenly became issues, in addition to his longstanding lack of speed/explosiveness. Ty Chandler took over as Minnesota's lead back down the stretch, and Mattison then signed a one-year, $2 million contract with Las Vegas this offseason. The deal is mostly guaranteed and thus gives him strong odds of making the Week 1 roster, but that doesn't mean he'll challenge Zamir White for the starting job or even be a lock for the second spot on the depth chart. The other RBs competing for roles, namely sixth-round rookie Dylan Laube and 31-year-old Ameer Abdullah, might be better options than both White and Mattison for passing situations. RANKS
Starts second half of loss Monday
Mattison took over for injured starter Sincere McCormick (ankle) in the second half of Monday's loss to the Falcons, finishing with 24 rushing yards (one fumble lost) on seven carries while corralling two of four targets for three receiving yards.
ANALYSIS
Mattison returned from an ankle injury of his own Monday before being thrust into a prominent role once Las Vegas' starting running back was ruled out at halftime. The former didn't do much on his nine touches, losing a fumble and getting tackled for a safety. Fellow backup Ameer Abdullah produced 66 yards and a score on 10 combined touches (primarily as a receiving option) for comparison. If McCormick is forced to miss time, Mattison figures to be the next man up given his experience and success as a starter in the past, with Abdullah likely being mixed in against the Jaguars on Sunday.

After four years of backing up Dalvin Cook, Mattison will get his starting shot this season as Cook was released in June. Still only 25, Mattison should have fresh legs thanks to a light workload over the years -- in fact, he had career-low 89 touches last year because Cook stayed healthy for a full season for the first time. While Mattison lacks breakaway speed (4.67 40, career 4.1 YPC), he's familiar with the offense, has the frame to handle large workloads (215 pounds) and even boasts a strong track record as a receiver (career catch rate of 83.3 percent at 6.3 YPT). He also has just two fumbles on 474 career touches, so he's as good as anyone at protecting the ball. Rookie seventh-round pick DeWayne McBride might have something on Mattison as a pure runner, but McBride has no history as a pass catcher and fumbled five times in 2022 alone. That should help ensure Mattison is a three-down back.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could be Raiders' top back ROS
Mattison is in line to serve as Las Vegas' No. 1 running back for the final three games of the regular season due to Sincere McCormick being placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Mattison had a four-game stretch from Week 5 to 8 when he logged at least 17 touches per contest, and over that span he turned 66 carries into 178 yards and one touchdown while adding 15 catches on 16 targets for 115 yards. He was sidelined for three games due to an ankle injury, but he returned for Week 15 against the Falcons and stepped into a larger role on offense after McCormick went down with an ankle injury. Mattison could operate as the Raiders' primary runner against the Jaguars on Sunday while Ameer Abdullah -- who caught all seven of his targets for 58 yards against Atlanta -- serves as the change-of-pace, third-down back.
