Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
A pair of injuries delayed Gelof's debut until early July. He was hit by a pitch in spring training and required surgery on his hamate bone; then, in April, he was pulled from his rehab assignment due to a stress reaction in his ribs. After batting just .080/.143/.080 in his first eight games back, Gelof was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas until late August. After being recalled, he played regularly before dislocating his shoulder, missing the final eight days of the season. Gelof managed a .174/.230/.272 line during his second stint in the majors last year. He's expected to be fully healthy after shoulder surgery and will compete with Darrel Hernaiz and Max Schuemann for playing time at second base. A return to his 2023 rookie form would likely secure the job, but he has struggled with both contact frequency and quality over the past two seasons. Read Past Outlooks
Deposits double in loss
Gelof went 2-for-4 with one double in Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis
Gelof blooped an opposite-field double in the fourth inning before adding a single in the ninth frame, joining Darell Hernaiz as the only Athletics to record multiple hits in the blowout loss. Gelof logged a hit in all three contests against Seattle, totaling five knocks in the series and marking a step in the right direction after he went 6-for-40 (.150) across the previous 10 games. With Max Muncy (hand) sidelined since April 28, Gelof has emerged as the Athletics' primary option at third base.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
2023
After breaking out to the tune of 14 homers and 14 steals in just 69 games as a rookie, Gelof endured the dreaded sophomore slump last season. He struggled mightily with strikeouts, fanning an AL-worst 188 times, which resulted in a 56-point drop in batting average to .211. Gelof showed signs of recovery in June only to post OPS marks below .700 in each of the final three months. The Athletics had nothing to lose and kept Gelof on the field at second base, affording him the opportunity to rack up 17 homers and 25 steals across 547 plate appearances. Gelof and the rest of the A's will be playing their home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento in 2025 -- home of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League -- which would seem to bode well for the offense. The pressure will be on for Gelof to bounce back and prove he should be considered part of the organization's long-term future.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could get look at third base
The Athletics could give Gelof a chance during spring training to win their third-base job, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.
Analysis
Gelof has played only second base at the major-league level, but that position has been filled after the Athletics swung a trade for Jeff McNeil. The 26-year-old Gelof has appeared in a total of 60 games at third base in the minors, so the position isn't totally foreign to him. The bigger question with Gelof at this point is what he could offer offensively, as he's slashed just .205/.264/.348 with a 36.1 percent strikeout rate over the last two seasons during his time in the majors. Gelof has minor-league options remaining and could begin the 2026 season at Triple-A Las Vegas.
