Sterlin Thompson

24-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Colorado Rockies
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Thompson has a nondescript profile, with the exception of the fact he's a Rockies position player who could play in 2026. A former third baseman who is now a below-average defensive outfielder limited to the corners, Thompson has fringe-average raw power and fringe-average speed. He slashed .296/.392/.519 with 18 homers, 12 steals, a 118 wRC+ and a 20.9 percent strikeout rate in 120 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League last year. The Rockies added Thompson to the 40-man roster this offseason, and while he has plenty of weaknesses (athleticism, raw power), they aren't things that will improve with more time at Triple-A. He turns 25 in June. Read Past Outlooks

Thompson went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs and a double in Wednesday's 8-6 loss to the Cubs.
Analysis
Thompson homered in the third and fifth innings. This was his first multi-hit effort since June 5, though he's had a tough time getting into the lineup over the last couple of weeks. The left-handed-hitting outfielder has lost out on a regular role as the Rockies get healthier, with Jake McCarthy (illness) rejoining the lineup Tuesday. McCarthy is likely to handle a starting role in left field, so Thompson's time with the big club could come to a close the next time a spot on the 26-man roster needs to be opened. So far this season, Thompson is batting .242 with a .722 OPS, two homers, nine RBI, seven runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases over 69 plate appearances.

With Thompson, it's been all about his hit tool, dating back to high school and college. He hit .332 in college, .296 thus far in the minors and .332 in the Arizona Fall League. Thompson enjoyed the extremely hitter-friendly conditions with High-A Spokane, posting a career-high .520 slugging percentage, but this is still a hit-over-power profile and Thompson is a fringe-average runner, so the bat will have to carry his real-life and fantasy value. He has average raw power and could be a 20-homer hitter with everyday playing time. Thompson played primarily third base at High-A, but he started seeing more time at second base and the corner outfield spots at Double-A and in the AFL. He has a plus arm but lacks the instincts and actions for the hot corner. Given that the Rockies have other long-term challengers at second base (Adael Amador) and in the outfield (Yanquiel Fernandez, Jordan Beck) who project as superior defenders and/or more impactful offensive weapons, Thompson will have a small margin for error at the plate if he is to carve out everyday playing time.
A 6-foot-4 lefty hitting corner outfielder from Florida, Thompson has one of the better hit tools among college outfielders in last year's draft. He hit .354/.443/.563 with 11 home runs, 10 steals, a 15.4 K% and a 12.1 BB% in 66 games in the spring, and Colorado scooped him up with the 31st overall pick and full slot money. Thompson's hands are very quick, and he can hammer mistakes out to the pull side, but he will likely always be hit-over-power. His fringe-average speed and average throwing arm could lead to him being a left fielder at the highest level, which will put pressure on him to reach his ceiling as a hitter. Thompson's exit velocities were in line with expectations, but he chased more than usual en route to a 24.3 K% and 4.5 BB% across 111 plate appearances across the complex league and Single-A. Rockies hitting prospects get the permanent green light on the bases and play in many favorable hitting conditions, so Thompson's minor-league numbers could look pretty impressive if he regains his form from college.
