Spencer Horwitz

28-Year-Old First Baseman1B
Pittsburgh Pirates
2026 Fantasy Outlook
It was a frustrating start to 2025 for Horwitz, who underwent wrist surgery in early February and was unable to debut until mid-May. He then hit only .232 with a .593 OPS across the first half of the season. However, the second half showed a glimpse of what the Pirates hoped to get when they traded for Horwitz, as he hit .305 with a .916 OPS across 230 plate appearances. The end result was a near identical stat line to his 2024 season, with his core skills being solid plate discipline, consistent contact and a corresponding solid batting average with a high on-base percentage. The primary downsides to Horwitz's profile are his lack of high-quality contact, leading to modest power production. In addition, he's a clear platoon bat, as he'll lose out on at-bats against left-handed pitchers. All told, Horwitz should be penciled in for around 15 homers with a .260 average and decent counting stats. Read Past Outlooks

Horwitz went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, two RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's 12-1 win over the Cubs.
Analysis
Horwitz drove home the Pirates' eighth run of the game with a sac fly in the fifth and later took Daniel Palencia deep for a solo shot in the seventh to make it a 10-1 contest. It was Horwitz's sixth homer of the season and third in his last seven games. The first baseman has hit safely in 17 of 21 games this month and has raised his average 39 points during that span. Horwitz is slashing .289/.391/.467 with the six round trippers, 25 RBI, 20 runs scored, one stolen base and a 26:24 BB:K across 184 plate appearances this season. While he doesn't hit for much power, Horwitz doesn't strike out and has a high walk rate.

Horwitz was one of the few bright spots on a disappointing Toronto roster as he came up and more than handled his own in his rookie season at the plate. Horwitz earned his promotion with a .335/.456/.514 triple-slash line in 57 games in Triple-A Buffalo where he walked more often than he struck out. He finished the season with the Jays hitting .265/.357/.433 with 12 homers and a willingness to accept walks. Those numbers were mostly put up against righties because he did not hit lefties well. All 16 of his homers came off righties, as he hit .310/.416/.522 against them but had just six doubles and a .244/.340/.291 line against southpaws. He has both first- and second-base eligibility for fantasy purposes, but Horwitz figures to be done playing second base after a series of offseason trades led to him ending up atop Pittsburgh's first-base depth chart. He is likely to sit against most lefties when the Pirates are at full strength, but he has a high floor against right-handed pitching, especially after getting traded to this less crowded situation.
Horwitz has been an accomplished hitter all throughout the Toronto system with a .303/.407/.464 triple-slash line in just over 1,700 plate appearances since 2019. He is the type of hitter that is both accepting of his walks as well as someone very willing to use his contact skills to put the ball in play having never struck out as many as 80 times in a season at a time where many minor leaguers are posting triple-digit strikeout totals. Horwitz's 2024 fantasy value is clouded in two ways. Primarily, he is only eligible at utility on draft day as he had six games at DH and five at first base last season. Secondarily, the Jays roster is rather loaded with talent and Horwitz's best path forward would be playing left field. If he were to get that job, he would still likely hit in the 9th spot of the lineup.
Horwitz had a .293/.409/.513 slash line with Double-A New Hampshire during the first half of 2022 to receive a promotion to Triple-A Buffalo, where he had a .724 OPS. Trading Teoscar Hernandez to the Mariners opened up significant at-bats between right field and designated hitter for the Blue Jays, but there's still not an immediate path to the majors for Horwitz. He saw most of his action last season between first base and left field, but his limited power (.117 ISO) could limit his potential at first base. The 25-year-old continued to show excellent plate discipline with a 15 percent walk rate, which would obviously translate well to any position in the majors. Horwitz is likely to begin 2023 back with Buffalo, but he could quickly be called up for his big-league debut with a strong start to the season.

Horwitz in inching closer to making his 2025 season debut, as he began a rehab assignment over the weekend.
Analysis
The 27-year-old has yet to play this year after undergoing wrist surgery in February, but he's currently on a minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona. He's expected to play in several games before being promoted to the majors. Horwitz should provide an offensive boost from first base once he's called up. In parts of two seasons with the Blue Jays between 2023 and 2024, he slashed .264/.355/.428 with 13 home runs and 21 doubles in 425 plate appearances.
