2026 Fantasy Outlook
Waldschmidt was underrated in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft and he remains underrated heading into 2026, despited being at least 40 percent better than the average hitter in each league he's played in. The No. 31 overall pick out of Kentucky has big-time bat speed and plus foot speed, and he is starting to look like a potential option in center field, where he played the majority of his games at Double-A. Waldschmidt slashed .309/.423/.498 with nine home runs, 19 steals, a 15 percent walk rate and a 17.7 percent strikeout rate in 66 games at Double-A, and as a righty hitter, he'll get a chance to play every day in the majors. He took advantage of the hitter-friendly environments at Amarillo and Hillsboro (.990 home OPS, .787 road OPS), but his patient approach and low strikeout rates still portend a high floor. He isn't on the 40-man roster, but the Diamondbacks depth chart makes it clear that Waldschmidt could spend the majority of his age-23 season in the majors. There could be some growing pains as a rookie, but long term, Waldschmidt could be a five-category contributor in fantasy while hitting in the top third of Arizona's lineup. Read Past Outlooks

Falls short of Opening Day roster

The Diamondbacks reassigned Waldschmidt to minor-league camp Sunday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Analysis
Heading into spring training, Waldschmidt looked to have a legitimate shot at earning a spot on the Opening Day roster after Arizona didn't make any major additions to its outfield over the winter to compensate for Lourdes Gurriel's (knee) extended absence to begin the season. Even with Corbin Carroll (hand) going down with a fractured hamate early in camp to put his availability for Opening Day in jeopardy, Waldschmidt never gained much momentum in his bid for a roster spot despite posting a .796 OPS through nine Cactus League games. Though he could continue to get regular run in Arizona's spring lineups while Carroll is rehabbing and while Alek Thomas is playing for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, Waldschmidt looks like he'll need to continue to mash at Double-A Amarillo or Triple-A Reno to begin the regular season before receiving his first big-league call-up.

2025 Fantasy Outlook
Waldschmidt is a strong target in dynasty first-year player drafts, especially relative to where he went in real life (No. 31 overall) to the Diamondbacks. He dealt with inopportune injuries as an amateur that led to him being lightly recruited in high school and playing only four games in the Cape Cod League before tearing his left ACL. He made up for as a junior for Kentucky, showcasing all the tools that matter for fantasy, including plus power, a great combination of contact ability and strong swing decisions, and improving speed that has a chance to be another plus tool. Waldschmidt slashed .333/.469/.610 with 14 home runs, 25 steals and a 16.5 percent strikeout rate in 59 games as a junior and slashed .273/.485/.318 with zero homers, four steals, 15 walks and nine strikeouts in 14 games at Single-A before a hamstring strain ended his year. He's just an OK defender in left field, but if he reaches his realistic ceiling as a hitter, he'll have no trouble playing every day. If he were to miss time again in 2025, the injury-prone tag might start to be applied, especially given how hard he plays.
