Rest-of-Season Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
McMahon has two more years on his deal with the Yankees unless he finishes in the top five this season in MVP voting. So, get used to McMahon in New York for the next two seasons after Colorado sent him to the Bronx in a deadline deal this past July. McMahon was not exactly hitting well in Colorado before the deal (.217/.314/.403), but he did worse with the Yankees (.208/.308/.333) when it was hoped the short porch in right would help offset the loss of Coors Field for McMahon. He did manage to hit 20-plus homers for a sixth consecutive full season, but 16 of those came with the Rockies. McMahon's issues against lefties is something the noncontending Rockies could deal with but not something the Yankees will leave out in the lineup on a daily basis. Expect McMahon to lose some playing time in a platoon situation once the Yankees finalize their offseason roster. Twenty homers and a .240 season in the bottom half of a healthy lineup should help McMahon compile some stats in 2026 but we'll eat our hats if he is an MVP candidate. Read Past Outlooks
Reserve option at shortstop
Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that he would be comfortable playing McMahon at shortstop in a regular-season game, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
The Yankees have been giving McMahon some reps at shortstop during spring training and have apparently liked the results. The 31-year-old will open the season as New York's primary third baseman and isn't likely to see enough reps at shortstop to gain positional eligibility. McMahon shifted to a narrower stance during the offseason to help keep his hands a bit higher after posting a .214/.312/.381 slash line across 154 regular-season games last year.

How does Ryan McMahon compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

McMahon hit the ball harder than he ever has in 2024 with an average exit velocity in the 91st percentile and hard-hit rate in the 92nd percentile. He also hit lefties better than he had in years (.740 OPS). Unfortunately, he ended with just a .714 OPS versus righties and a dreadful second half (.592 OPS) wiped out all the good work he did in the first half (.797 OPS, 14 home runs). McMahon has never been even a league-average hitter in terms of OPS+ and his swing-and-miss issues mean he's more likely to hurt than help in the average department. However, the 30-year-old has been very durable and will keep getting the Coors Field boost, assuming the Rockies continue to resist any trade overtures.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will see reps at shortstop
McMahon is expected to see time at shortstop during spring training, according to Greg Joyce of the New York Post.
Analysis
McMahon is expected to see most of his playing time at third base, but the Yankees are preparing him to play at shortstop in case of an emergency. McMahon has played only three innings at the position at the big-league level throughout his career, so he'll need a lot of reps to see whether he can handle that change or not, even if he's going to be used sparingly at shortstop and only in an emergency basis.
